To put this in perspective India is less of a place and more of a planet. This rifle is a

Mark of their thoroughly corrupt system.

Other naturalized weapons programs have been more successful. Indonesia for example produces licenses FN-FNC copies as SS-1 and SS-2 rifles made by PT Pindad. The rifles are so good they are now exported. Singapore produces the SAR21. Surely India could produce a rifle that fell in between there somewhere.

The fact that China and Venezuela both license designs from Russia shows how foolish India is being.

Hell India could have designed their own lower receiver to one of the AR standards and just put together a simple piston drive upper for it. Licensing an AR-18 based deign wouldn't have been complicated either. Colt would be quite happy to work with them.

The AR18 patent expired IIRC. they could literally copy it. They probably can't really work with an outside entity because of their convoluted politics. Also they are pretty much poor as shit despite their size. They have to use their labor advantage to afford a new weapon.

They appear to have wanted a 5.56mm rifle and there are so many options I don't understand why they produced their own and didn't even bother with considerations like STANAG.

I think you nailed it on the AR18. I think it would be fun to see fielded by a major nation.
