No you aren't being sensitive. Your coworker was being daft.

Thanks... that's what I thought. I'm not really into guns myself (but grew up around them), so I wasn't sure if I was right about it.. and, as usual, no one took my side in the debate and nothing I could find online was backing up what I was arguing. Two comments agreeing with me isn't exactly definitive, but it's better than nothing.

It's completely against normal nomenclature to refer to the pellets as bullets. They're called either "pellets" or "shot." Shot is, I suppose, the more correct of the two, but both are fine. "Bullet" is specifically when a gun shoots a single, solid projectile that isn't a round ball. Well, except for shotguns, when a shotgun shoots a single lead projectile it's called a slug. So basically you never use the word "bullet" with a shotgun, even when it seems like you should.

No. Your coworker is a retard. Tell your boss/superior/whoever the fuck is in charge about her fear mongering and bring up the reputation of the station/newspaper/blog/employer. That's how you win this one my friend

Oh... I wish it was that easy. I've already been marginalized for not toeing the line around here. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't totally out of line with this.

You aren't. Find another job. If you are eligible, go to the recruiters office.

A shotgun's load is typically called shot, though that may be confusing without context. If you know the size of shot, you could clarify with 'buckshot' or 'birdshot' (I think there are typically ~8 pellets in a buckshot shell, and 20+ for birdshot).

A shotgun shell is not a bullet, and shotgun pellets are not bullets. If the story gets published as is, send it off to a pro-gun forum and ask that the users provide feedback to the author. :P

No you're not being too sensitive because your publications reputation depends on being able to accurately describe things. If you come off as know-nothing jackasses you're literally losing money because of bad writing.

That being said, the stuff that comes out of a shotgun is called "shot" but when it's being sold, it's typically measured in "pellets per ounce". "Shot" is correct as is "pellets". Shotgun "bullets" could be "sabots" or "slugs" but never are called "bullets" in any vernacular.

Go tell your coworker it's limp wristed writing like that which causes his article to...

It's either exaggeration intentionally worded to deceive or a gross misrepresentation by an ill informed journalist/ editor. The use of language uncommon in related vernacular can easily be misinterpreted. These casual readers become misinformed. It's a disingenuous piece catering to hasty readers and I wholly believe it's intent is malicious. You're not being too sensitive.

At a glance,my first thought was the sign had been shot 60 times. The writer only later reveals the instrument was a shotgun and the damage to the sign was inconsistent with one would expect 60 shots from a shotgun to look like. So there were 60 shot holes, not 60 shots. Given the nature of the weapon, it was likely shot only 2 or 3 times. Dramatically different from the 60 shots inferred by the byline.

Who is to say you're being too sensitive. I read the article, extracted the facts, and went on to the next bit of information with only a mildly annoyed residue. (for the record: I am not sensitive).

Bird shot doesn't have 60+ bullets inside. Bullet in colloquial sense means ammunition cartridge (case, bullet, propellant). When reporting to laypeople as "60 bullets" when a single shot may have been fired, that's basically fear-mongering.

Communicate to your editor (I'm assuming you work for a media company) calmly that your co-worker's representation is wrong. Find any spelling or grammatical errors that would make your point salient that your co-worker is at best an idiot, and at worst a liar.

HA! Good one! Criticizing anything like this is usually framed in a very specific way which immediately kills any conversation on the topic. They're so uptight about it that makes me think they're consciously distorting facts to push an agenda... but the fact is, there are so many other problems muddying the issue that it makes it difficult to know exactly what's going on (like, it's very possible they're just shitty journalists/editors and there actually isn't any agreed upon agenda).

Ok, then... Commit an inside job. Throw monkey wrench into the works. Make it progressively worse and worse. Just don't get caught.

It's probably that they are shitty journalists and they all have intersecting pet projects.
