You need a revolver.

Get a smith or a ruger and you'll have a huge choice of grips. You can usually fit a revolver to your hands much better than you can fit a pistol. You can dry-fire easily and you can do a 'blind-dummy' drill where you load one or two random empty cases and see that you don't flinch when you pull the trigger. You burn less ammo and shoot more carefully. Once you master that double-action pull you'll shoot every handgun better.

Get a .22 or a .357. If you get the .357 you can shoot anything from powder-puff .38 wadcutters to some pretty thumping hunting loads. The trajectory is flat for a handgun and you can reach out a long way, once you learn how.

And you don't have to chase brass.

If you get a .44 mag, you can also shoot .44 spc. That'd be pretty fun.
