Mossberg 500 or Remington 870. A semi auto is only slightly faster than a pump, provided you actually train with it.

Mossberg 590. Great gun. Can't go wrong with it. Lots of options within that model.

You're better off with a Remington. Probably the 870 Express.

Mossberg 930 JM Pro - 18" barrel with 10+1 magazine tube. Should be around $600-$700

Mossberg 500 with the 18.5 security barrel. You want a shorter barrel since your planning on using it indoors. They do sell a combo that is a good deal and you get two barrels, then you can skeet shoot which is a lot of fun.

Or get the Mossberg Shockwave, it's pretty badass looking, but I've never shot one.

Shockwave is the LAST word in HD shotguns. Just be damned sure you've practiced with it. They've started coming out with a foregrip hand strap. Anything that provides positive grip assistance scares the shit out of me.

Take a look at the Mossberg Maverick 88.

It's made by Mossberg, but carries the Maverick name and costs about $200 retail - not used. Lots of options like a full length stock and even a pistol grip.

Best home defense/entry level 12 gauge shotgun that your kids can learn on later.

Mossberg 500 there is not a better shotgun. Plus a pump will not care what shotgun load you use, semi autos can be picky.
