My buddy Chris came over and jammed with me for a while last Saturday night, and we learned a couple of old songs that we had never played together before. We just sat on the couches and played acoustic guitars and recorded them with the cell phone, it was fifty below zero degrees farenheit outside and i didnt have the heat on in the studio, so this is what you get. I think it turned out all right,

Here's a Dylan classic, Blowin' in the Wind

[–] KatHarzso 0 points 6 points (+6|-0) ago

Songs makes me think of my childhood, of my parents listening to this.

[–] cynicaloldfart 0 points 6 points (+6|-0) ago

Sweet, you've arrived. Has the devil rum done it's magic and made you ready to sing us a tune?

[–] crazy_eyes 0 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago

thats cool, I hope they are good memories

[–] TheBuddha [S] 1 points 6 points (+7|-1) ago

It sounds great.

I really need to start using a good browser again. I kinda like this shitty browser, however.

If you want to sound like Bob Dylan or Greenday, just sing through your nose!

I like Peter Paul and Mary's version of this.

[–] cynicaloldfart 0 points 8 points (+8|-0) ago

And like magic, here it is:

https://invidio.us/watch?v=Ld6fAO4idaI

[–] crazy_eyes 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

Its a good song and I think anybody can sound good singing that one

[–] nigger_plz 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

Man they used this song on a commercial during the second half of the Superbowl. They used Dylan's original version. Very cool.

So all the youngun's recognize these songs more than the latest shit, eh. To quote the great Kelly Bundy, duh.

Groovy song fellas.

[–] crazy_eyes 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

thank you sir, as always thanks for listening

[–] Nadeshda 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

Nice, love this song and it has a nice lilt to it! Sweet share!

[–] crazy_eyes 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

Thank you!

[–] Seventh_Jim 0 points 13 points (+13|-0) ago

I said I'd post this in the v/music thread earlier today. I was joking when I did so, but here it is.

Camptown Races, on violin with 1 month of experience.

https://instaud.io/3hpw

[–] TheBuddha [S] 0 points 10 points (+10|-0) ago

You are more awesome than you even know!

Fantastic!

It was horrible, but I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed that you had the courage to share!

[–] Seventh_Jim 0 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago  (edited ago)

Took about six takes. I know I've been slacking on daily practice, especially playing open strings with a metronome to build muscle memory. String crossing sucks.

Still, I'm pretty happy that I got this far in a month. I have almost zero music experience prior to this. I'd like to redo this on March 8th and see how it compares. Hopefully won't be painful to listen to by then.

[–] cynicaloldfart 0 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago

The important part is that you're having fun. Thanks for posting, it's a little scary the first time. But now you've made a sacred commitment to keep coming back so we can enjoy your journey and improvement. It's a long road (to the top if you want to RnR) but you've taken a good start. Cheers!

[–] KatHarzso 0 points 6 points (+6|-0) ago

One month of learning to play, eh? Damn!!! Pretty dang good!

[–] Seventh_Jim 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

Thanks!

[–] crazy_eyes 0 points 6 points (+6|-0) ago

Got to like a person who keeps their word.

Keep at it it gets easier and easier

[–] Seventh_Jim 0 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago

Thank you for the encouragement.

[–] TheBuddha [S] 1 points 12 points (+13|-1) ago

Hello and welcome to another edition of our Friday Night Guitar Thread.

Last weekend, I went out of my way to make the weekend special for a lot of people. I was thinking to myself, what can I do to make this week special for the musical goats?

I didn't really have any ideas but you can thank EH for this one. We started talking about it over the weekend and she suggested I try to take a song and go off script a little. She figured that it worked well for the last venue, we should try it in the FNGT. She's doing well at learning there are a variety of paths.

By Monday, I decided we'd try the unthinkable. We'd touch the untouchable. We'd take perfection, and make it better. (I've got an ego!)

I've always lamented that I've done a mechanical, exact replica of Joe Satriani's song, Starry Night. The rhythm guitar isn't very complex, because Joe's not going to let anyone else shine in his band. That'll help! (She did a lovely job and it's more complicated than it sounds.)

So, what did I do?

The song has always started off with a bit of a bluesy sound and finished dramatically. I love the finish, and didn't really change it at all. Instead, I decided that I wanted to maybe change a few things and make the bluesy portion a bit more passionate. I wanted to improve on Satriani's lack of emotional evocation. I wanted it to really make you think.

So, they're subtle changes, and the lead's tempo is kept essentially the same. I bend a little earlier, a little more fully - almost too sharp, and aim for a smoothness that Satch just never had.

That's right...

I made Satch better.

You'll see...

On top of this, EH actually spent some time mixing this. Her advice is, "Listen to this one with good headphones." (Something she and I were discussing. We don't actually know what quality you end up hearing, because some speakers suck!) She spent a lot of time working on this, to soften it where it needed to be. She understood the objective and we were able to speak in a common language. She's getting better.

I'm pretty impressed with the mix and I really like the differences. I encourage you to listen to his version someday. In the meantime, I highly encourage you to listen to this!

So...

Ladies and gentlemen, presenting the Eldest Hoodlum and TheBuddha Band, improving on perfection!

Enjoy!

https://instaud.io/3hlO

And, if you'd like to hear the differences, this is his studio version:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_m0-f7N9hM

Either way, that is my guitar student in whom I am well pleased.

[–] nigger_plz 0 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago

That's a gorgeous piece of music. I never heard it before. Listened to both of them. Your recording is cleaner, crisper. Makes the original sound muddy, think I heard a banjo.
Your girl is some kind of top notch producer.

[–] TheBuddha [S] 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

Thank you, we both appreciate that.

The goal was to give it some greater passion. We don't often leave the script and changing the work of a master is taboo. But, rules are meant to be broken.

[–] TheBuddha [S] 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

By the way, that was just two Stats.

In an effort to be a bastard, it was a Malmsteen edition Strat on lead. The rhythm Strat would have been from the mid 1990s, as I recall. I'm not actually sure as I have a few in that color.

[–] Nadeshda 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

Loved it, he is one of my favorites and I miss booger too... really you guys rocked it and the added depth was just absolutely blooming lovely!

Thank you so much sharing this!

[–] TheBuddha [S] 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

Glad ya liked it. I miss 'Booger. We had some pretty good episodes of getting more and more insane with what we played.

[–] cynicaloldfart 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

Yeah, that's it. And I did, twice. I can tell the mixing went very well. Her production understanding and skills get better every time. Was she playing her new acoustic? And, oh yeah, you played pretty good also. :)

BTW, is J going to be back playing soon?

[–] TheBuddha [S] 1 points 4 points (+5|-1) ago

Those are a pair of Strats, actually.

J will surely be playing with us again, but she's a bit busy with some projects for school.

She says, "Tell him I said thanks COFFEEPANTS." Yes, it must be in all caps.

We tried to give it just a touch more emotion. A little more depth and character.

[–] SandHog 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

That was awesome. You guys locked it down. Did you record parts 1 and 2 simultaneously and then layer guitar 3 after the fact or just switch up tones via pedals?

[–] TheBuddha [S] 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

1 and 2 together, then laid the third track over it.

Glad you enjoyed it. You've not visited many guitar threads lately.

[–] TheBuddha [S] 0 points 10 points (+10|-0) ago  (edited ago)

@puttitout should sticky this thread some week.

It's the best damned thread on voat, thanks to you folks.

Just a reminder for you lurkers, let 'em know when you enjoy their work. It is work. @crazy_eyes mentioned doing nearly 30 takes for a single track. We have @cynicaloldfart who archives it all in a forum format. The goats have put years of their life into this.

Give them a hand, they all earned it - especially the new players.

[–] PuttItOut 0 points 15 points (+15|-0) ago

I'll sticky these every Friday night from now on. That's a great idea!

[–] TheBuddha [S] 0 points 9 points (+9|-0) ago

That would be holy balls level of awesomeness.

We've been doing this, every single Friday night, for quite a while now.

[–] Nadeshda 0 points 6 points (+6|-0) ago

:D Geez you... lol... pure gold I tell ya ;)

Send love and greetings to @puttsmum for me

[–] cynicaloldfart 0 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago

Thanks so much. So many talented people that need to be heard.

[–] crazy_eyes 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

A lot of those takes were abandoned in the first thirty seconds so its not really as bad as it sounds

[–] TheBuddha [S] 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

Yeah, it's still a bitch.

[–] cynicaloldfart 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

It so great to see all the new peoples tonight. Y'all come back now, hear? And bring your friends, every Friday night same time, same station.

[–] TheBuddha [S] 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

It's fantastic. We took your cue and spammed voat, as well.

[–] rosary505 0 points 9 points (+9|-0) ago  (edited ago)

[–] Seventh_Jim 0 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago

Really dig the intro on soy sauce. The electric crunch was fun.

Added Walking Shadow to a playlist.

[–] rosary505 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

I do enjoy seeing what kind of grimy sounds I can get out of my microbrute synth.

That's awesome! ^.^ I'm glad you like it.

[–] TheBuddha [S] 0 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago

I'm not sure how many goats are going to want to give Spotify their information?

Goats are paranoid and/or lazy, as a general rule.

[–] rosary505 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

I know how true that is. How about a bandcamp link, since you don't have to login to listen?

[–] cynicaloldfart 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

Can you post this to instaud.io or soundcloud? We keep an archive of these threads and would like to be able to include yours.

[–] cynicaloldfart 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

Not really my genre, but well done. Good production and mix. Thanks for posting.

[–] rosary505 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

Thanks I appreciate you giving it a listen.

[–] KatHarzso 0 points 8 points (+8|-0) ago

https://clyp.it/f4b1tc1b

Fuck it I'm drunk enough

[–] Nadeshda 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

Hey Kat!!!! That was lovely and you have a nice distinct sound! Oh dear me that was so nice!

[–] KatHarzso 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

You're way too kind to me. I think you have a very lovely voice, just so you know, so am a bit flattered by the sweet kindness coming your way.

[–] crazy_eyes 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

That was something. Im not sure what that was, it sure was something

[–] KatHarzso 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

I just like to sing, but don't like the way it sounds so I very rarely do it around anyone else. So mainly just by myself in the car.

[–] cynicaloldfart 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

I rather like your softness. Emotive and soothing. You need to make Fridays nights a regular thing and share some more.

[–] KatHarzso 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

I'll do my best but cannot make any promises. It's seldom I get alone time like this.

Never realized how girly my voice was... shit. I like them throaty type singers.

[–] TheBuddha [S] 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

Hmm...

I kinda want to hear you sing with some force behind it, like nobody is listening and you're driving your car.

[–] KatHarzso 0 points 6 points (+6|-0) ago

https://clyp.it/2cxkleox

Me trying to sing like I ain't being listened to. Ain't working but oh well. Probably first time in like ten years I've heard my voice like this.

[–] KatHarzso 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

For some reason I cannot think of my favorite songs I like to sing... been listening to way too much Nordic music as of late.

[–] Nadeshda 0 points 8 points (+8|-0) ago

Ahoi my dears!!! Okay I had a terrible drive and I finally got back, borrowed a guitar and membered an old song... it's a bit sticky but it'll do!

I am sorry I am late, work, kids and other stuffses etc. My voice has not yet recovered so I thought I would share an old school favorite of mine... Wooo the memories flooded back and I was surprised I membered how to play... I have to ping @LegalPerson as he will be remember this time of life well... and @Katharzso as she rocks these tunes too!

Anyway here we go; a quick share on a short time with limited resources: Membering Nothing Else Matters

Enjoy I will listen to all your tunes in a minute...

[–] TheBuddha [S] 0 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago

That's a pretty busy song to play.

And you made it on a night I'm not in bed early! Yay!

[–] Nadeshda 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

lol, I messed it, I stickied it at times and it is not my best, I used to rock it several years ago though, hah! but I need to get a better guitar to play on too....woo what a stretch on this broad neck acoustic I am playing, ooooh la-la... haha... my double jointed fingers got stuck a few times, hehe.

AND most importantly; I am so glad you are woke! Lol... Well done Neo :P

[–] KatHarzso 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

Ahoy! I love that song... First song I ever learned how to play on the guitar (ok bits and pieces xD). It also happened to have been me and my ex-husbands song. It holds a painfully special place in my heart.

You play beautifully. <3

[–] Nadeshda 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

Me sorry and happy ALL at the same time... Eeesh heart strings, thank you Mam... thinking of you and BIG HUGS!!!!

[–] nigger_plz 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

Man alive you dig arpeggios. 6/8 ones are great.

Good stuff young lady.

[–] Nadeshda 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

Wow thank you Sir, I am originally classically trained in piano and yip it translates to guitar sometimes... which is pleasing to me, lol

You are always so kind to me, thank you!

[–] crazy_eyes 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

Nicely done Nadesh

[–] Nadeshda 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

BLESS YOUR HEART!!! You are always so very nice to me Sir... Looking forward to rocking your tunes soon, it was a rush to set this operation up tonight, glad I got my laptop which allowed me to record on my phone and email the tune and then convert to mp3... geez the things we do after a very loooooong day...

How's you?

[–] TheBuddha [S] 1 points 8 points (+9|-1) ago

The thread is slow, so let's pull something out of the archives.

I recorded this about a year ago and I think I shared it. However, I was using Vocaroo back then. So, it's not in the archives.

Turn it up. ;-)

https://instaud.io/3hpq

[–] Nadeshda 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

Woooooot!!!!!!! YASS!!! Where is Mister Booger to rawk out with me!!!!

Oooh so nice, love it!!! MOAR!!!

Hehe...

[–] TheBuddha [S] 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

We did increasingly technical stuff, just to do it. It wasn't a competition, it was more like, 'Check this out!'

[–] cynicaloldfart 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

You absolutely nailed that one, and that's not easy, I'm sure (well maybe for you).

[–] TheBuddha [S] 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

It's not too bad, on the difficulty scale. I am glad you enjoyed it.

It's a bit of fancy tapping, playing with electronics, bending, scales, and a few chords. The timing is probably one of the harder things for me.

[–] crazy_eyes 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

Great tone, man, sounds like the Edster himself.

Awesome playing

[–] TheBuddha [S] 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

Thanks. The giant pause is there on purpose. That belongs there.

The only really hard part is a couple of quick movements from tapping to vibrato and then to tone.

[–] crazy_eyes 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

I went and got my headphones and im listening to the other one again at the moment

[–] TheBuddha [S] 1 points 2 points (+3|-1) ago

Enjoy!
