Like normal, I'll get you started.

I have nothing new, but I have an older recording from when someone on TF sent me some tab and a challenge. I've not shared it here.

I've had friends and family, so my last week was very busy. I don't have a show this weekend, which is nice. I do have one next week, but it's during the week. We're playing an agricultural fair. Alas, they already have a stage so it's not even an excuse to use my new stage!

Still, it's nice to have a busy summer and it's nice for the band to be this busy - and busy this quickly. Time is flying by and I'm truly enjoying my grand adventure. Still, have a track:

https://instaud.io/2qHu

Enjoy! I might be in and out tonight - as I'm not sure if two of the folks are meandering off with friends or if they're going to want some attention. I told 'em I'm pretty busy tonight and they wanted to go see some of his friends anyhow. So, we shall see. Right now, it's just the eldest hoodlum and myself in the studio.

Aww man.. I love that tune! Then again, who doesn't! Well done. LOVE the chord melodies!

Thanks. If I find the tab, I'll upload it. It was (I'm pretty sure) Jung's tab and I want to say it was something crazy like a double capo affair? That was from a couple years back and I smoke too much pot to remember all the details. ;-)

Sounds fabulous to me. Very nice. Wish I could play like that.. I don't have the coordination to even get close.

Thanks. That's many, many hours dedicated to practicing.

That was fairly early on in my self-recording days and I was using a two-mic setup. I like the tone it came out with, but @MrHarryReems is writing stuff that makes me think I'll be able to do even better in the future.

Nicely done. Haven't heard that song in a while

[–] TheBuddha [S] 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

Thanks! That's all one guitar, too. Somewhere, I still have the tab that they sent me. I think it's one of Jung's tab pieces, so it's crazy. That one took a couple of weeks - and that's back when I had more time. I kept fucking it up and couldn't get a clean recording, as I recall. I just couldn't get a clean play-through.

I'm unable to remember which guitar that is - but I'm pretty sure that's a D-28 with light strings and not nylon. I really should take notes. I'm not half as organized as I seem!

Man I wish I could do that. I tried and tried to play this Sungha Jung version and there was no way I could play that solo. You gotta bar the third fret like a capo for that solo. That killed me, could not do it to save my life. I re-arranged the solo to play in the first position. I try to play this every day and I still can't play it. It's been two years. My fingers just ain't got it but I still plug away at it. It's a real good version.

Took you 2 weeks and I've been trying 2 years man and had to change it to suit my skill level and still can't hammer it out.

Sungha Jung is incredible. That's probably his best arrangement. I like his arrangement of Adele's "Someone like you" also. That one's killing me too.

I do a bunch of his stuff. My favorite is Video Killed The Radio Star, though I switched up the golpe. I am also fond of November Rain.

Ok, here's my entry for the week. I honestly wasn't sure I was going to make it. I didn't get started arranging this piece until Tuesday, and I recorded parts in the minutes between madness. I just finished the mixdown 2 minutes before the hour, and had to take the dog for a walk before I settled in.

This is another Child ballad. You see, Mr. Child spent years gathering folks songs from Europe that were fading into obscurity and cataloging those songs. I've wanted to do this song for years, and never thought I could pull off a passable arrangement. In the end, I'm fairly satisfied with it. It's a song about a fierce young maiden who is determined to stay that way, despite the efforts of a Highland man who kidnaps her and attempts to rape her.

Good one. I worked out all of the parts to Erin Go Braless this week Everything is recorded but the vocals. Allergies got the best of me. Can't wait to get to the clean, allergy free air.

I love how the beginning sounds. The effects on the flute are haunting. The harmonies are really good too. Will you & Mick have something for next Friday?

[–] MrHarryReems 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

Thanks! I had a lot of trouble with the flute part, as simple as it sounds. I'm not used to playing in A/F#m. Very much like the piano, each key feels completely different under your fingers. I'll definitely have something next week, I have a lot of material to re-create for the band and I believe our house guests are finally moving into their house this weekend. I basically use most of these for scratch tracks for the band. @TheOldMick is slightly more retired than @TheBuddha, so he has no excuse! Also, he has a huge back catalog of really good songs.

Nice. Is she a lesbian? What the hell? I bet I could seduce her. LOL Great song! I never heard this before. Like Buddha says, your songs are so smooth and sound so great. This one was no exception.

[–] MrHarryReems 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

Thanks man!

You have to understand that back in that day, a married woman was basically property. This song is one of the oldest songs about women's empowerment. Also, like many other Child ballads, there are multiple versions of this song. In another version, she won't marry anyone from Strathdon because she's got her eye on a man from another town.

Have you seen the movie 'Songcatcher?' I suspect you'll like it. It's very topical.

As always, so smooth and easy on the ears. I wish words would describe it better, but it's a soft recording. Soft in that it is a bit like adding just a touch out of focus, like a fine amount of delay added. Finding that careful blend seems like it's a bit of an art.

Thank you, sir! I'm going to put Songcatcher on the list. I may even watch it tonight if I can find it.

Hey, some people referred me here so I thought I'd share my first original song I finished. I had to record it on my phone but I went out on my porch so it sounds more "aesthetic". It's called Ice Queen. I recently got out of a abusive relationship so this is kinda about that. I want to get more serious about music, so I got a mic on order and I'm excited to get more HQ content out there this week. UPDATED VERSION (Still iPhone Quality)

Well... I worked on a new tune this week. I was gonna have it all done for tonight. Completed the instrument tracks but when I tried to sing, the old vocal cords wouldn't cooperate. I guess I'll just grab something from my archives. I have been into writing Celtic stuff for awhile, but just to let you guys know that it's not all I write, here is a rocker from a few years back. https://soundcloud.com/fleenor/devil-eyes.

"You should be someone I despise."

@crazy_eyes will probably appreciate this one!

One thing these threads do is motivate us. You know you're in the right thread when you find yourself rushing around to make stuff just for the coming week's thread!

It puts me in the mind of ZZ Top for some reason. It has a 70's cop show sound about it. I was actually expecting to hear a wah pedal start scratching. Very nice.

As much as this one sounds familiar, I'm not sure you've shared it with me before. It says you uploaded it three years ago, and I've been gone for six, so.... Did you write this one back in the day?

0
3

[–] TheOldMick 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

It has been awhile since I wrote it. You've probable heard it before. I'm hesitant to post much old stuff. I'd rather do new material. I do think that @crazy_eyes would get a kick out some Cranky Old Men stuff though.

I have nothing. Here's an old one I did to a guitar backing track. Its not me singing, its Steve Morse I think. Stranglehold https://vocaroo.com/i/s1ywKTq7lTjs

Oh, and here's a rough demo of something I was considering. This is just an initial idea so it has mistakes and whatnot. A early morning radio show was having a contest for the best song someone could send in that they would use at the start of their show so I came up with this corny thing lol. Then I found out that it paid nothing. meh. https://vocaroo.com/i/s1xI36mDm2MY

Seriously, he plays some incredible stuff every week. You should hear some of his Satch covers!

[–] TheBuddha [S] 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

The first one... Considering you play by ear, I'm as impressed as I usually am. That's an amazing ability.

The second one, I like the guitar but the track you were playing with - not so much. The guitar reminds me of a cross between Nugent and Walsh! Excellent!

[–] CheeseboogersGhost 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago  (edited ago)

Thanks. That's keytar on the second one lol and yeah that backing sucks and is corny as hell.

That second one totally sounds like a radio show opening thing, I could hear the DJ talking over you and ruining it

Good evening everybody, and good afternoon to @MrHarryReems cause it's still not evening where he lives. I have a song to share with you tonight, that features myself on bass and my friend Chris playing guitar and singing. You're getting sober Chris this week. Got to switch it up now and then and keep you all on your toes. This one is a short little ditty, I don't remember ever hearing this song before we played it. I like it though, its called pussy sweet and don't worry, you can play this if the hoodlums are listening, theres nothing nsfw in there. Just a good title.

[–] crazy_eyes 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

I don't have any idea where that song came from. Chris said some gay guy wrote it. I don't know which one. I thought it was pretty funny myself.

I'm not sure that's NSFW, but it's okay. She's old enough to listen to NSFW music.

He sounds lethargic, not as energetic as he sounds while he's drinking.

I laughed out loud at the title. I told the GF about the title, she asked, 'What could it possibly be about?'

Shit, this was funny. The way Chris punctuates his lyrical line with, 'fuckin,'..

0

[–] TheBuddha [S] 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

'Tis a good song. It's hard to play and sing, at least for me. As you work up and down the strings, my head just gets confused. I end up out of sync.

[–] nigger_plz 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

You're right. Same with Danny's Song by Loggins. Impossible to play and sing.

[–] crazy_eyes 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

I played this one at the bar last week when I did that solo show, I did the staccato picking, chris just strums through it, I even sang it. I had to stare at my fret fingers to get it right
