Solved! Thanks, /u/TheBuddha. Turns out it's a practice gimmick within the programming, that can be turned off.

I had kind of pondered that. They might be trying to help you pick up speed.

I tell people to not worry about speed. I actually have a new guitar student, which is the first in a long time. I've taught a number of people to play.

Anyhow, playing the guitar is largely muscle memory. Learn it right. Play it slow. Speed will come in time. Don't force it, it will come. I'd rather you play it at 1/4 speed, but play it clean, than have you play a sloppy version at full speed.

Let's start here:

How long have you been playing?

What brand, and model, guitar are you playing?

What is/are your goal(s) with the guitar?

How long have you been playing?

--62 years, give or take...I grew up through the 50's on Dean Martin, Perry Como, and later Sinatra and Tony Bennett, enjoyed all the bossa nova stuff. When I was 19 I was approached by a city jazz station to be an all night jazz DJ. Now I come to look through the Real Book, and I know at least half of what's in there by "brain memory". Sometimes I have to refresh myself about the bridge; but 'the head' seems to be burned into my neurons. So that's nice...beautiful songs like "In A Sentimental Mood" and "I Love You For Sentimental Reasons" more or less play themselves. I really didn't realize how much I was learning the first time around. Well, I'm grateful now.

What brand, and model, guitar are you playing?

Can't remember, but it's an Ibanez, one of the small bodied jazz guitars, not expensive or special. I use a Boss ME-70 for a bit of compression and reverb here and there.

What is/are your goal(s) with the guitar?

--No longer care about performance, though I will if I think everyone (including me) will enjoy it. Now that I have this lovely computer support system, it is revealed that I have little beyond basic scales; modes, chord substitution, chord melody...all Greek to me, and though I have little time left, I'll put some of it into what seems most productive.

You and I have spoken before, Buddha. (bit of an echo in here)

I sent you a link to a youtube of the band I was playing with about a year ago, before you had begun your Friday Night sessions; though I believe you were thinking about it then. Sadly, that band succumbed to unrelated physical injuries...now I'm enjoying the comfort of iReal Pro, a set of sidemen who never get tired, don't drink or eat or sleep, and don't care how many times I want to go again! "Even when it's bad, it's still pretty good" ~!!

I've never tried it. Assuming you have a cell phone, grab a free metronome app and check.
