Good for the boy to help out others. Are the rules regarding free or reduced price lunches different everywhere? I would have thought the school would have given the poor kid a break if his mother had been unemployed.

I think it varies per district, but many things are possible, maybe she felt too ashamed to report that she had lost her job, or maybe when she was employed, she made too much money to receive free/reduced price lunches and she forgot to report what happened. Or maybe she had not heard of the program.

I know in some states, certain districts have free lunch for all kids, while others only have it for certain kids. My daughter's current school only gives it to some kids but my nephew's school has to offer it to everyone.
