On consumer bikes the foot pegs tend to have metal feelers so you get an early warning and are mounted so that they fold up rather then catch should you put one on to the pavement while cornering. In this case I wonder how much of the disintegration is by design and how much of it is simply a function of the exceedingly lightweight race design of the foot pegs.
