REEEEEEE it's actually a Brause Blue Pumpkin dip nib, not a fountain pen at all.

Haven't seen your name in a long time, still remember you as the guy who loved dice. Been lurking more?

Lost my love for dice when I realized that in the end pretty much all dice do the same thing, some only incrementally better than others. As you can see by my tard knowledge on calligraphy, I've gotten into fountain pens. As for the lurking, I've just been gone. Taking a break. Going off and doing things, finding hobbies and doing them, meeting girls and doing them, that kind of stuff.

Is this actually how they're supposed to work, and why they have the split metal tip (for pressure-sensitive line width)?

Yes, that’s how copperplate calligraphy is done: https://www.iampeth.com/lesson/getting-started-copperplate

The tines are designed to flex apart and have a heavier line width in response to pressure.

TLDR: yes

I'm old enough that I actually used a fountain pen in elementary school.

But we never did this shit with it.

That's not even using a dip or fountain pen, that looks like a brush pen. Totally different.
