In the core. The exhaust pipe just upstream of it is going to be at least slightly hotter.

Depends on the conditions. A catalytic converter is literally burning any unburnt fuel in it, which is why it gets hot.

Some of them do that, but it's a fairly minor component. Most of the heat is from the hot exhaust going through.
