The guy just watched a car explode a few feet away, maybe he thought it wouldn't be a good idea to operate an internal combustion engine after watching one explode. Also probably not a great idea to run across a fucking highway...

Also, if the car is in the flame head, it probably doesn't have enough oxygen to run. Sure it might have been safer to put it in neutral and roll back, but how clearly are you going to be thinking when you're in the middle of sudden hell.

Engines don't blow up like that. You wouldn't see as spectacular of an explosion even with thrown rods or a motor running 60 pounds of boost. Likely the other guys hot catalytic converter ignited the gas vapor.
