Heres the thing right. I dont really do a lot of games, im picky as fuck, but i LOVE me a good racing sim. I bag out codemasters but ive got most of the F1 titles, plus Assetto Corsa, and a long time ago i signed up with iRacing (made by the most incredible team of coders, and the first people to give racing sims a real life, think Indy 500 (8 bit colour anyone?) Nascar Racing, Indycar Racing, and the absofuckinglutely terrifying Grand Prix Legends....)
I LOVE when you have a good crack at a single iteration of one of the Codemasters sims where it starts you off in a rookie and youve actually got to make the best of what youve got, and depending on how well you perform in the shit car, it will give you contract offers for the better teams that in i think... f1 2013 they would expire a few rounds later, so you could either go 'yeah ill not do better, better take this contract for force india, vs me, 'fuck that, ima drive for RBR next year, keep smashing out what i need' - that was satisfying as fuck... although id give anything to start a championship on the NEXT iteration with it loading my profile from the last, and starting off as a returning champ but thats another story..
Conversely - iRacing was annoying as all fuck. Ive been driving F1 sims for years. Give me one of them cars, and slap me on albert park or monaco and ill fucking destroy you. but iRacing... no, i have to 'learn' how to drive, and putt putt around fucken brands hatch in a little volkswagen beetle for half a year and earn enough fake internet driving points to then drive something a little bit faster..... not only is this boring as all fuck, its actually really difficult, in part because its fucking hard to concentrate on that boring shit, and because its actually a pain in the fucking arse to drive shit cars around a racing track at low speed anyway... you end up doing that whole rocking backward and forward in your seat thing trying to go faster.... this is not satisfying for me one tiny little bit, i dont have the time or patience to work up to the good stuff... so in that regard, fuck yes id be happy for loot boxes, but id prefer them to allow me to be able to jump straight into what i feel comfortable doing in the first place.
tl;dr make it relevant, believeable, part of the achievement and autists like me will unlock the shit out of those locked characters... but ill be fucked if im paying for it, especially when i can quite easily break shit so i can get it without paying for loot. yes, you can break and instantly unlock every track car and mod on ea's Real Racing 3 on android (thats actually a fucking fun game that one).... the best fantasy track i have ever seen in any racing game, its the dead fucking set geographically and scenically accurate 'Melbourne' track.. not albert park, Southbank.... you literally start at what is in real life a tram stop out the front of the arts centre (depicted) on St Kilda Road and turn left onto Flinder St past the depicted station, complete with its fucking ancient train clocks... again, satisfying as all fuck to race and win on... MSAC and Bob Jane Stadium are missing from every single iteration of Albert Park F1 track ive ever driven and yet this dinky little game has me driving past the car dealership i bought my second car from 20 years ago....
just my two penneth worth.

I just got into SimRacing. Glad to see this post. I really liked iRacing at first, thought the idea is cool but it's like, I go onto their official race schedule and some people will just deliberately try to PIT you or just run you into a wall or another driver. It's kind of cool how you can drive some rally cars and do some rally tracks, but aside from like the three they host, it doesnt give you much in the way of rally cars or dirt racing.
I consider iRacing to be good for players that like NASCAR. Because unless you plan on spending $150 on that game, all there is mostly is one EU track where it's not an oval, and the rest are all NASCAR oval tracks and that gets very boring especially on a monthly subscription.
I consider Assetto Corsa to be the best, due to the mod and community support. Rfactor 2 is really awesome too, and seems way more refined and AC, but ACC is coming out with weather, and all tons of features that none of the current "good" racingsims have.

AC is good for a solo blast around a track but the ai is fiddly.
It DOES however support openvr, which means using riftcat i can go full wireless vr with my samsung vr. And im only playing it on a 4 year old gaming laptop that isnt even close to supporting oculus or vive!!
