But at what point does functionality start mattering less than form?

Is it really worth it to spend all the time developing this when the screen will barely be big enough to see anything on and you're missing your shoulder buttons?

There is no lack of functionality. You're running a screen that is larger than the default Gameboy screen (but utilizing most of the full window in the case), and it's intended to be a handheld device. I understand that many people who never had these other handheld gaming systems (prior to say... a PSP) may not understand the draw, but it's actually a really cool project and pretty awesome. The complaints would be to me complaining that someone who hacked up a PSP to play MAME games and low end computer games wasn't strong enough to play high def, massive storage requiring games. It just doesn't mesh with the intended goal.

Second, the screen is larger than you think. If you're comparing it to other gameboys, the difference is negligible.

That said, both the article and the video explain the shoulder button placement. He had to grind out the middle screw posts for everything to fit (I imagine the Pi was too wide) and thus used those screw holes for buttons for the L and R buttons.
