Games! We should talk about games more than anything! New releases, old favorites, Speed Runs, Let's Play's, development news, what we love, what we hate and so on and so forth.
Try to post things that create discussion. We want people to feel engaged and feel their voices are heard, rather than to be a place of disposable content.

The Gameboy Advance would be a better system since it would have usable shoulder buttons.

It wouldn't have as retro a feel though. Those old Gameboys were like bricks. Such great little systems.

But at what point does functionality start mattering less than form?
Is it really worth it to spend all the time developing this when the screen will barely be big enough to see anything on and you're missing your shoulder buttons?

Space for a pi zero, screen + screen controller and battery good enough to power the whole thing and not crap out in less than an hour might be an issue in GBA case. Pi needs a minimum of 5volts where as the GBA was designed to run off two AAA at 3volt so you'd probably need a 7.2volt lipo and some method to bring it down to about 5.
I might buy myself a cheap GBA and try to see if its possible, I'd say it could be done if you get the right parts.

Not trying to be "snarky" like the guy above, but I have an honest question: why is this newsworthy?
Unless I'm missing something, hasn't this exact same thing been done hundreds of times before? Hell, I could've sworn I did this as one of my first rPi projects...

It is a very common project to build an emulator machine with an rPi, so much so that there's a few dedicated software packages for it (http://blog.petrockblock.com/retropie/). The only thing that makes this noteworthy is the fact that it's jammed into a Gameboy and uses a tiny screen. I like that it has physical buttons, but I hate how small the screen is. It would be fine for game boy games but trying to play SNES or Genesis on this would be an ass-pain.
But yes, this is a very common project.
Here's one built into a Gameboy Pocket
Another regular Gameboy build
A custom 3D-printed one with a giant 5 inch screen

My phone does this too.
Edit: was being snarky, but I just realized how awesome it is to have the ability to play anything before like 1998 on one device.

game boy advance is newer than 1998
[–] Dofu ago
Lul yeah you're right. I have a DS emulator too, my brain just wants to believe it's still the 90s and the ps2 is about to drop and kill all my school work.

I just downloaded star fox for SNES on android and it is great, so many roms to go through still :D fuck iphones
[–] Diavolo1988 ago
but controlling games like this on the phone is extremely impractical.
[–] Dofu ago
Yeah, once you start thinking about getting a controller for your phone, that's when you start thinking it might just be better to buy a real console again.

Where do they hide the bumpers for the SNES controller?

It's mentioned in the video too.
