i only played the open beta.

it is ok, i guess.

it is very obvious that it is an mmo rather than a shooter:

  • enemies above or on your level are very bulletspongey
  • enemies below your level can't even scratch your armor

which clashes quite a bit with the realistic atmosphere and setting. But the looting and weapon modding is quite nice.

the cover system is pretty good, although it doesn't allow to shoot lower than ~45°, which makes high ground less useful.

pvp:

i think the game shines here quite a bit, as there are often very tense moments when interacting with other players.

The looting system in the dark zone is different: you can only carry 6 items and they must be extracted before you can use them.

Extraction can only be done at certain locations and has a countdown until it arrives so others can extract their stuff too ( or steal yours) which makes the whole ordeal very volatile and can lead to very interesting situations.

Which makes it all the more dissapointing that the rogue system is highly favored against it:

the payoff of going rogue i very low, if there is any at all.

the rogue system works like this: if you shoot another player too many times you go 'rogue' for a time.

The more you fight, the longer you stay rogue. While rogue and other players can kill you and get currency, exp and your loot.

And everyone can see your location, if they are close enough or your rogue level reaches max.

If you get killed while rogue, you lose all the exp and currency you accumulated plus all the contaminated loot on you.

Additionally it is very easy to go rogue by accident, for example the deployable turret shoots at any player shooting you, or you shot at, even once. So he shoots you without going rogue, your turret shoots him, you go rogue.

So going rogue just puts a giant "free kill" sign above you and offers only a chance of any payoff at all.

From the perspective of someone who doesn't usually enjoy single player:

I don't really enjoy the single player.

That being said, I did enjoy the multiplayer aspect of the game, specifically the pvp. I feel like the single player is pretty standard arpg fare. It seems a lot like what I've seen of destiny on streams. So if you're into that, you'll probably be into the single player. It played fine, and it wasn't the worst thing; I just don't like the endless pve grind in arpgs against predictable enemies. The pvp is what sets this game apart from other games of its ilk. The clever part about the pvp is the loot extraction process. It gives you a little bit of the rush of a full loot game like dayz, but it's not so punishing as to scare the masses off.

The main questions after the beta are: is there enough content? Is the pvp area large enough? Is the range of loot diverse enough? Are the skills/talents that weren't available compelling? Will you still want to play it after a month? I'm not really sure about those. If you're into games like destiny, warframe, and h1z1; I do feel you'll get the box price out of the game for sure.

edit: also, if you're just looking for a shooter, pick up overwatch. It's a blast, and has staying power imo.

Yeah, my main issue is wondering about how it will last. I think I might get bored fast if it's the same enemies and weapons all the time.

The whole concept of the game seems pretty cool but I love realistic games and I just can't get over the fact that you need to put 2 magazines into an enemy for them to die. If they release some ultra hardcore mod I might check it out.

Tom Clancy's games are always known for their realism and I really wonder why his name is put on this game.

Well he is dead so I guess the people who have the right to use his name don't need his approval.

I'll copy the same sentiment here that I expressed over on reddit:

I paid no attention to this game until the open beta. Outside of the general chatter of the all-too-familiar gradually disappointed hype train ticket holders, I didn't know much about the game. A friend at work mentioned the beta and I figured I'd give it a shot. Going in with no expectations, I enjoyed it enough to pre-order a copy.

Why do you feel the need to preorder another generic reskined shooter? Especially from Ubishit?...

So that Amazon will have at at my apartment on launch day at 20% off, maybe?

My lazy ass wants to shoot right home from work and play it. I don't feel like going to the actual game store and having to fight throngs of spoiled kids and their shithead parents to play "generic reskinned shooter."

Got it for free with a Logitech mechanical keyboard. It actually came with two codes, so a friend got it for free too. And we are ready to rock!

First off: Fuck Ubisoft - for actually having a game that I preordered. I typically don't preorder or even buy full priced games, but The Division has locked me in.

I loved every aspect of the game. You truly need to know what you're getting into though. Anyone coming into The Division without knowing full well it's an RPG is going to be disappointed by the "bulletsponge" effect. Which has never bothered me. (I love World of Warcraft, Diablo 3, Borderlands, etc)

The single player missions were nice. The follow the "dungeon" formula when it comes to layout. Going in from the start, killing mobs, then a boss at the end. Not sure how it will play out in the other missions, but it was enjoyable in the beta.

The encounters are a little bit of a letdown, pretty much the same thing over and over. Either protect the JTF (I already forgot the name of them) and then the others are let some civs out of some locked room. Hopefully there's no variety with these in the actual game.

The DZ is fun, though it will get repetitive if there aren't random events that happen in the zone. Plus there are some places in the DZ that are abusable for easily picking off others without anyone being able to retaliate. (one access point)

It looks like any other typical MMO 3rd person shooter WoW game.

I played the open beta. I wasn't planning on getting this game anyway, and having tried it out confirmed that. The single player is good but nothing special, but the PvP is what really put me off. It basically encourages players to be assholes to one another by giving a chance to steal other people's stuff.

You would think, but when I played it there was actually more groups willing to help you defend your stuff together again the AI attackers than steal it from you. It was a lot friendlier than I thought it'll be. That was in the closed beta though. In the open beta I was killed as soon as I entered even though I had no loot. I'm hoping the full game will be more like the closed beta. But its doubtful unfortunately.

For the most part people would help pitch in and help others against NPC attackers. But there were several instances of groups of 4 just going after single players to steal their stuff and just be dicks.
