You're acting like screwing over the customer isn't something we've had to deal with ever since humanity first got the idea of exchanging money for goods and services.

No it has gone on for a long time you're right. But I believe there was a time when companies just gave warranties without extra cost and then didn't try to screw you out if the warranty if something went wrong. That business would care if the goods they shipped you arrived in good order or not. Maybe even a handshake from your contact with the business every once in a while.
