Some that come to my mind as self-evident are Command & Conquer and AssCreed. Interesting settings and stories that got torn the fuck apart by bad writing after they turned into shameless cash-in franchises.

AssCreed sucked writing-wise. Why make it all in his mind? Takes you out of the game.

Which C&C series?

The Tiberium series. C&C 1-3 was awesome. C&C4 was tragic - both gameplay and story.

I loved the AC4 storyline half way until he turned into a goody two shoes assassin and I was like "BORING" and sold the game.

I like the AC series. There were a few things that clued you in that things were going wrong. For some reason they made the game taking advantage of the year 2000 apocalypse/solar flare/y2k scare or something. So I guess you know, they tried to make it to coincide with real life events that everyone was paranoid about. Once Brotherhood came out, the game took a hit in graphics, story, and just bad puns and comical characters (Bartholomew). Then Revelations came out and the main characters changing their look in such a bad way, you could tell they weren't trying anymore. Well Desmond at least had a very big graphical change. However, I absolutely loved Istanbul and how beautiful the city was. Even if Ezio's character changed, it was easy to get used to since he still had the same charisma. Then AC3 came out, and my god, real life graphics were horrendous, they just stopped trying, and the whole end of the world plot? Well, they figured they had the potential to make games every year, by changing the plot, but they had to end Desmond's story, which I was already getting annoyed at. I have no doubt that Ubisoft had everything lined up to make the game into what AC4, Rogue, and other games came to be. Focusing on this big corportation, more Animus plans, and hacking, with no character but the player. Which was fine, but they tried and introduced many characters that went nowhere. The Sage from Black Flag comes to mind. Where did they go with that?

So, the last game I played was Unity, and I'm lost on the story. Although I still enjoyed the "Assassin, Animus parts". The real life story is meh. I did enjoy some newer games than Ezio's trilogy. I loved Black Flag, 3 (the forest was awesome) and Rogue, since it combined all 3 of those games, trying to tie it all together but still such a weak storyline.

Halo's lore got fucked from Halo 4 and beyond. The Bungie games were fairly realistic, gritty, believable sci-fi, whereas the 343 games added weeaboo fighting magic and made Chief fall in love with Cortana. I dunno, I guess kids are into weird shit these days.

I hate that the very first game 343 got their hands on, they killed cortana AND showed mastercheifs face.

Also, random ass new faction we're gunna milk, oh and here's some random covenant, enjoy!

Agreed. Is just disrespectful to the fans, original writers and the franchise to take an stablished mythos and just change so stuff and alter the tone in your first intteration

I was hoping someone would bring up Halo. In my mind it's the best example of a series that was wrapped up so neatly with the third game that 343 had to practically pry the doors open again to make room for more plot. What frustrates me is that Bungie had set the story up for a big reveal: It was such a good way to wrap up the plot and bring things full circle, but it also meant the end of that particular storyline, so 343 had to in order to keep the door open for more material.

That's not quite right according to all the games and lore before 5. Humans are the Reclaimers, they were extremely technologically advanced but Forerunners were a different race entirely who were very sympathetic to the humans.

I dunno. I though it was pretty fucked at 2 when they turned the Covenant into Jihadists and forced a sympathetic covenant on us. The gameplay was solid as was the multiplayer.

Warcraft. Warcraft I and II, where pretty straight forward story, yet pretty rich. Warcraft III, was fucking great. Then, World of Warcraft happens. I mean, come on guys. Warcraft used to be about orcs and humans wars, not about how Cthulhu fucked dragons and how a bunch of heros kills some all mighty villains.

Others franchises that get their lore fucked are Command&Conquer Tiberium serie ( Kane immortal? Fucking Aliens? Fuck off, guys! ), Resident Evil, most fighting game (Soul Edge/Calibur, Tekken, Street fighters, Mortal Kombat... Not that the lore was that important anyway).

Warcraft's story has been dead since the end of WotLK, at least to me.

Totally on fucking point. I want to play a new game that gave me the same child-like wonders of WC3... or I'll just go replay WC3.

Star Wars, do I really have to explain?

EA and Disney along with a cluster fuck of fan fiction.

I came to realize a while ago that Star Wars badly needs to enter the public domain at this point. The Expanded Universe books and the various games have all added some very strange elements that resemble fanfiction to the lore, and with a lot of fans extremely dissatisfied with the things George Lucas himself tried to do with Star Wars, is there any true author any more?

Mass effect

Could have had more in depth about the proteans and their life before the reapers but no lets have romances. Also loosely lore but ret conning ammo from the first game. From infinite ammo to thermal clips still makes me wonder, if we are in the future something like mitigating heat and ammo efficiently would have been resolved a loooog time ago instead of a patch job by introducing disposable cooling tubes.

As long as you read the codex logs they had a lot of lore in mass effect

Zelda.

It's turning into Kingdom Hearts. The storyline goes every direction except forward.

I actually like the way the story line in Zelda regresses backward through the timeline. The first game was at the end of a dark timeline, the second game took place after that. The third game took place before the first game and showed a more peaceful but still corruptible Hyrule, to Skyward Sword which shows the founding of Hyrule itself. Viewing the legend unfold backwards, from what is basically the end of the civilisation and going back to how it was founded, was pretty cool I thought.

Zelda doesn't even have an ongoing storyline. You could pick up any game except for Majora's Mask maybe with no experience of other games and still understand the game.

Resident Evil.

Should've ended after 3. That way, the saga would've basically been about STARS discovering bio-engineering gone wrong in Raccoon City, which led to a zombie outbreak that hit the streets, and a race to escape from Raccoon City before the government nukes it to eliminate the zombie outbreak.

They should have just made 4 as a new IP.

Funnily enough Devil May Cry was started as the fourth and it veered from RE so much they did make it a new IP. So it had already happened kinda.

Metroid Other-feckin'-M, the game where Samus tries and fails for a baby multiple times. Goddamn, I hate what that's done to the series' lore. I'd mind less if Nintendo opted to ignore it, but I get the feeling they won't. Smash Brothers certainly didn't.

I think it was Yoshio Sakamoto who said that he didn't consider the Prime games to be "true" Metroid. He then went on to direct the steaming pile you mentioned.

And now we have Federation Force as an extra kick in the dick. Wonderful.

Oh, god-bloody-damnit...

It really makes me wish that they'd just give the series over to a western company already, just like SEGA did with the Sonic series. They try too hard to make Metroid appeal to Japanese gamers, who've gone on the record as people who don't give a shit about the series, anyway. It's ridiculous.

Sorry, what are you talking about? There is no game called "Metroid: Other M." I've heard rumors, but it doesn't exist. The last Metroid game was Prime 3.
