I understand why they're doing it. I agree with them, that it makes sense to have the person putting in the time getting compensated. But 'buying a mod'? What if an update ruins the compatibility? What if I don't like it? What if the mod is fake, and I just handed my money over the internet in exchange for nothing? If anything, I should just be able to tip them. I download it, love it, give them what spare change I can in appreciation, rather than a salary. That means the creative modders will be able to make those donations a salary, not the other way around. After all, I'm not asking the mod maker to make the mod. I'm merely trying to soften the blow of how many hours someone spent trying to get a tiny bit of detail right by buying them a cup of coffee. If someone makes a full blown modification with voice acting and the works? I'm impressed. Here's enough for a night out.

But I'm not going to give you $20 for a fucking weapon skin.

Exactly, it's the same old issues from before that everyone brought up, only this time with a different game.

Will Value start hiring lawyers to field the DMCA claims from people repackaging free mods or portions of paid mods? Or hell, what about software patents on the way a mod is implemented?

Most likely not. Valve will probably pull the 'our community can curate it - that means the good stuff must be good!' card, and ideally deal with the outliers that still bought the fake mod anyway. I mean, what if I buy it, and it contains a virus? The mod functions like advertised, but I just paid to infect my computer. How is that going to be regulated when payment is involved?

Seriously, I'm not 100% they understand just what they're doing. They're not stupid, not at all. But I think the way they introduce it will be it's success or failure. Slapping a massive advert at the helm of the store page that says 'Now Skyrim mods cost' isn't quite the way to go about it. I mean, the internet went overkill when it was announced. People organising review changing, and the Free Weekend to coincide the 'celebration' was a means to lower it's review count even further. Some announcing the end of the world, and others declaring their career as a pirate. All sorts.

Valve need to up their game big time. Mainly in support, but that's another story. A company as intelligent as they are knows not to fuck shit up, although I give them kudos for kicking the hornet's nest instead of poking it with a stick.

I don't understand why they are doing it. It makes ZERO sense.

Money ruins the idea of modding. It creates a ton of issues that aren't there currently all in the name of Valve trying to make more money off of the games. It has NOTHING to do with paying those who mod the games. Otherwise they wouldn't have set it up as a 75/25 split at the start.

On top of all of that, you just suddenly took a sharing community and created a community where no one is going to give anyone else their code, their help, etc.

Valve. You suck. Simple as that.

Wow, was that actually the cut? Whilst as I said before I agree with giving some compensation to those that put the effort in, that's just a low thing to do.

Yeah, Valve. Don't you think you make enough money already? Probably the reason why it wasn't a donation button - otherwise how would poor Valve get their cut?

Some lessons need to be learned more than once I suppose, paid mods just won't work and here is why. Making mods them being popular enough for someone to make a living on is the exception rather than the rule. So for all the mods that don't gain that popularity you have the problem of support, mod makers that also have full time jobs or school are not going to be able much less want too help every end user who has trouble using their mod, incompatibilities with other mods or load order or a whole list of other possibilities diagnosing that can be a nightmare and that is the reason it will not work. No support.

Exactly, I think a voluntary donation system would be much better overall.

Just setup a link to allow donation to w/e account they link it to.

Oh no I agree donation system is exactly how to handle this sort of idea but that negates valves ability to make money off it so it won't happen.

But valve can't get a cut of donations, or maybe they can?

Firstly, donations don't work. They haven't worked until now and they wouldn't start working if Valve actively endorsed them.

Secondly, scammers don't benefit, because you have to made $100 before seeing a single cent of the money you made.

What's the matter?

Don't think that Fluttershy skin for your character is worth $20?

This is going to make an interesting black market for mods.

Donations are the way to go if you want to never make any money from mods. All the people asking for donations instead have never actually donated to any mod makers.
