If there was ever any doubt that the Escapist is an untrustworthy site, this little gem goes a long way to removing it:

The allegations and concerns are numerous (see below), which gives us a sense of urgency to get this story out there ASAP, ideally first thing tomorrow morning.

That was a statement made by John Keefer, managing editor of the Escapist, in an e-mail to RSI's director of communication. In this e-mail, he presented the complaints of the disgruntled RSI staffers and gave RSI a total of 4-8 working hours to respond. Because the Escapist is so damn important that RSI staff should be expected to drop whatever they're doing and respond.

More to the point of the statement I quoted is this tragic delusion that anything the Escapist would ever report on is so vitally important to the gaming community that they need to forego the basic processes of fact checking and gathering both sides of the story. They're not reporting on terrorist activity or major weather patterns. They report on video games, and to think for half a second that they were doing anything other than trying to make sure their newest clickbait article wouldn't get scooped is absurd. It has nothing to do with performing a necessary service for the community and everything to do with generating hits to make the money at the expense of the community. We all know that for every person who read the most recent Escapist article on the topic who saw through the bullshit, several more bought it hook, line, and sinker.

And that's just shameful. This isn't about Derek Smart. It's about shitty journalism and the effect it has on the community. We don't need any more details on Derek Smart's day to day activities to know he's an asshole, but we do need to know when a journalism site is putting hits ahead of the truth.

And if the truth is really that Star Citizen is going to flop we need to stop defending Star Citizen solely because it's loudest critic happens to be an ass and we don't like him.

If you haven't got a significant financial stake in Star Citizen, it makes no difference to you whether it flops or not. The only people who have incentive to care are the ones who invested and people who invest what they're not willing to lose are not being smart investors.

People who have no financial stake in the project who act like they should care as much as those who do are just being silly. So far the only information to come to light on the project has been provided by a certified whack job and a handful of disgruntled employees. There's no credibility in what they say.
