If there was ever any doubt that the Escapist is an untrustworthy site, this little gem goes a long way to removing it:

The allegations and concerns are numerous (see below), which gives us a sense of urgency to get this story out there ASAP, ideally first thing tomorrow morning.

That was a statement made by John Keefer, managing editor of the Escapist, in an e-mail to RSI's director of communication. In this e-mail, he presented the complaints of the disgruntled RSI staffers and gave RSI a total of 4-8 working hours to respond. Because the Escapist is so damn important that RSI staff should be expected to drop whatever they're doing and respond.

More to the point of the statement I quoted is this tragic delusion that anything the Escapist would ever report on is so vitally important to the gaming community that they need to forego the basic processes of fact checking and gathering both sides of the story. They're not reporting on terrorist activity or major weather patterns. They report on video games, and to think for half a second that they were doing anything other than trying to make sure their newest clickbait article wouldn't get scooped is absurd. It has nothing to do with performing a necessary service for the community and everything to do with generating hits to make the money at the expense of the community. We all know that for every person who read the most recent Escapist article on the topic who saw through the bullshit, several more bought it hook, line, and sinker.

And that's just shameful. This isn't about Derek Smart. It's about shitty journalism and the effect it has on the community. We don't need any more details on Derek Smart's day to day activities to know he's an asshole, but we do need to know when a journalism site is putting hits ahead of the truth.

And if the truth is really that Star Citizen is going to flop we need to stop defending Star Citizen solely because it's loudest critic happens to be an ass and we don't like him.

If you haven't got a significant financial stake in Star Citizen, it makes no difference to you whether it flops or not. The only people who have incentive to care are the ones who invested and people who invest what they're not willing to lose are not being smart investors.

People who have no financial stake in the project who act like they should care as much as those who do are just being silly. So far the only information to come to light on the project has been provided by a certified whack job and a handful of disgruntled employees. There's no credibility in what they say.

Yeah, I'm not sure that "rebuttal" helped. He was accused of taking everything personally, flying off the handle and insulting people.

He responded by taking it personally, flying off the handle, and insulting everyone involved.

Somebody should have told him that responding with 15 pages of emotional diarrhea was not good PR.

Sorry his executive management and design team didn't want to contradict the 8 hours it took him to write the article.

All this drama is pretty crazy, and a little saddening. Hopefully it'll all fade away once the game comes out in full force.

I've read your comment now, yay! And you know what? I like you. And I recommend you/anyone take a peek at this:

Regardless of your take on the state of Star Citizen, here's a side to consider

(Its not my video. I liked it too.)

Yay! Pretty funny video, especially the troll voices. Yeah, all the fighting between space game fans and other people is just not that important. All that matters is whether or not the game is actually fun. And since it's not even out yet, you can't really pass judgement yet.

The only reason I'm upvoating you is because your name also begins with a "2". Frankly I didn't read your comment, sorry :(

Haha, the power of 2-nmes is a fine reason for an upvote in my book :)

Fuck. Derek. Smart.

NOW more than ever am I interested in backing the game more than my 2013 initial pledge (of $150). I chose to help fund a game, I'm not entitled to a goddamn thing beyond a "Thank you for your pledge". Yeah, it will be nice when it launches, but I didn't buy the game yet (duh), and certainly didn't pre order a damn thing. Its a crowdfund, I know full well what I got into.

Fuck Derek Smart. Fuck the bullshit from these one-sided " journalists".

Is this the Derek Smart of BC3000AD fame?

Because if there's a dude who doesn't get to say a goddamn thing about broken promises, it's that Derek Smart.

Good for you, you pour your money into that big hole in the ground, prove us all wrong. That'll show me.

Let me know how that goes for you.

Holy shit, it's a fucking video game. Perhaps it's because I don't follow other mediums as closesly, but there doesn't seem to be the same drama surrounding film or books.

Keep in mind that there are people involved in this who have individually spent literally thousands of dollars on this clusterfuck, it's a pretty unique piece of crazy for sure.

Films and books don't crowdfund 90 million dollars and then fail to produce what's promised. They only do this with private funding.

Imagine if they did.

Book and movie fans would be up in arms too.

I have heard that the video game section of KS is the worst; in all the other types, apparently, there's a higher rate of success. I'm not sure if that includes the technology section but simple stuff like comics, etc.

I'm pretty sure there's been plenty of film drama over the years but I wonder if it has to do with the technological based aspect of it now days - everybody's on the internet talking shit instead of doing it personally so nobody hears about it. Plus it might simply be the nature of film PR being more solid - who's stopping developers from acting like children online? The vast majority of people have these sort of moments but at least they're sensible enough to keep it private and attempt some rational response once they've claimed down.

There's nothing in the linked article that supports what you're saying.

Chris Roberts, damnit, you could've taken the high road instead of trying to publicly take someone else down a peg in a bid to inflate oneself's superiority.

This whole thing's a mess. Thanks once again for kicking this whole shistorm off, journalists.
