"one could conceivably see an Apple TV that’s more powerful than the Xbox One before that product is retired. With an aggressive price point, too, up to two hundred dollars cheaper than the Xbox One"

When has Apple ever released better, cheaper hardware than its competition?

It's an appliance for playing Farmville. Facebook/Mobile gamers are even less discerning about quality than console gamers.

It won't deliver a better gaming experience, but much like McDonald's sells a lot of "food", the author is suggesting it may well beat the declining consoles by volume.

Um..... Actually. App product don't even play farmville well because of how shitty flash is on non-windows computers. I guess you could run boot-camp to get to Windows though.

Ouya is like chivalry - definitely not dead, but in a coma.
And we're thinking of switching off life support.

Two completely separate markets.

He's right that Apple TV will probably sell like motherfucking hotcakes now that there is a growing number of mobile gamers and tablet babysitters, but that's a completely different set of people than the ones buying actual consoles. There might be some intermingling between the two, but I doubt you'll see anyone buy an Apple TV instead of a gaming console. Most people who have any plans of buying a console are doing so because they like console games, which the Apple TV cannot deliver.

I agree with you. Plus, I think there are some other variations on what you are getting at that many in this thread are missing because they are already pretty committed gamers. I have Apple TVs in my house. I also have a wii u. The wii u is used almost exclusively by my son to play Disney Infinity and Skylanders and by my younger daughter to play Just Dance. If the Apple TV becomes capable of offering those games, I'd have no reason to have both. I cannot be alone in this. While it may never replace higher end consoles and definitely will not replace PCs, it could well grow into the largest gaming system in terms of penetration into homes and revenues. I'm not predicting that, mind you, but if it happened I wouldn't be totally shocked, either.

It's really comparing Apples and Orangutans. I've got portable PCs, a desktop computer, an XBox One, an AppleTV and of course a smartphone, and they're all serving different purposes. The only things I could cut out and replace with some of the others without losing features are the AppleTV and the desktop. Mobile games are a thing because they are MOBILE. I'll play Bejeweled in the bathroom at work or while waiting at the DMV for hours. But mobile games on the TV? Why should I? And even real videogames sold through the Apple app store suck because you can't interact with others online who bought the same game through Steam. Only gaming I can see being done on an AppleTV would be Farmville and CandyCrush-like games, and that's a totally different demographic and market as console or PC.

Sounds like Apple is creating a Roku. the actual Roku boxes have gaming capabilities.

The Roku remote also has a headphone jack, and that's an option for XBox controllers, too.

Now I want this to work, I want to see Apple and it's offensive content rules deal with stereotypical FPS players voice chat.

AppleTV isnt new. They just started the whole marketed gaming aspect.

Amazon was pushing that idea pretty hard a year or two ago with Fire TV and even selling a controller designed for it. They've even brought in their own team of game developers and while nothing extraordinary has been produced the content is leagues ahead of many mobile games.

....and the games on the roku are shit. If that's what Apple is trying to emulate, they're going to fail. People didn't buy the roku for the games, they bought it for the video streaming capabilities.

Woudn't be surprised if it's just Apple buying more journalists/reviewers again.
