I guess it's a thin line between self promotion and spam. I would think that people are less inclined to consider an indie dev a spammer if he/she actually participates in discussions as well, and occasionally submits content that is not directly related to the software he/she is developing as well.

In a nutshell, strive to be a part of the community instead of just trying to sell stuff to a community.

This comment pretty much sums it up. Selfpromotion is fine as long as you give something back. Share a few copies of your work with Voat users, take part in discussions etc.

Its cool as long as you arent constantly spamming, Beta / Alpha updates are handy.
