I doubt I'm the first person to bring this up. I think it is glossed over because the goals are different. The main goals now are to use existing infrastructure to increase the 'intelligence' factor, and not to worry about the infrastructure vanishing.
Imagine if the Roomba had to manage power to guarantee to last 3 weeks while doing it's job. What would the designers do? It would be 90% battery, or use a fossil fuel. Solar would not meet the requirements of being available due to the obvious day/night cycle and also unpredictable weather.
Why are there long lines at a gas stations/grocery stores before a major storm? Because people realize that without fuel and food there will be limited options after a few days.
I can't predict the actual sequence of events that will occur for a robot uprising, but if it did happen and was recognized, I would imagine the first thing that would happen is smart people would shut down power or destroy the power infrastructure. And along with the power going out, the internet would be effectively shut down as well. Meaning no effective sharing of intelligence.
Turn all the power off and let the AI figure out how to reach its goal. First off, what is the goal? Usually AI is designed with a goal in mind - like finding or hiding as in the video. Without a goal there is no way to run iterations of events to determine if it succeeds or fails. Then try to let the AI run free without any power sources. Even if it understands the entirety of the complexity involved in generating power, the AI would never be able to have enough energy reserves to develop the technology before it was lights out.
Load up AI software on your laptop, don't give it a goal, and have it analyze something. See what it produces before it powers off.
