Games! We should talk about games more than anything! New releases, old favorites, Speed Runs, Let's Play's, development news, what we love, what we hate and so on and so forth.
Try to post things that create discussion. We want people to feel engaged and feel their voices are heard, rather than to be a place of disposable content.

It's bad game design. MMO's are notorious for this. I'll give FFXIV a pass as they have a stupidly detailed game guide.

Dungeon Crawl Stone soup has a decent tutorial that should help you with the basics of the game. You'll still need to learn optimal play on your own though.

It is a thing sadly. I do not even know if there is a specific term for these kinds of games. Essentially they are games that give no explanation for anything and depend on you relying on wiki articles for context. Minecraft was a perfect example of this during its early years.

Basically they make the assumption that the player isn't a retard and will read the manual before playing. I prefer it over games with 2h unskippable tutorials that do assume that the player is a retard and don't even have the decency of writing a manual.
Rogue has permadeath, so it would be pretty boring to go through a tutorial everytime you die, which will be frequently.

Jeez, the other route is to trial and error each item... Even if you were in debug mode and able to fuck around any way you wanted with an item it would take forever to do 100s of items AND memorize it. The hell? There's also the huge barrier of optimizing gameplay based on the rng...
Like someone said, no descriptions, no play

Roguelike is code for read the fucking manual.
[–] ClandenCTrake ago
On a scale from 1-10, how much do you love the phrase "read the fucking manual"?

Autist-porn games.

I remember my buddy showing me dark souls and talking about how hard it was. Doesn't even have permadeath.
[–] Wahaha 2 points -1 points 1 point (+1|-2) ago
Dark Souls is a hard game when you suck so much as a gamer, that you thought what the industry was shitting out so everyone would see the ending had a difficult setting of "normal". Dark Souls being considered hard is a testament to how fucking bad people are at video games.

Make my epeen hard
[–] theoldones 1 point 0 points 1 point (+1|-1) ago
yes
a roguelike is supposed to be as hard as possible in certain design aspects
[–] ClandenCTrake ago
Why don't they black out the screen while I play? That harder to play
[–] Wahaha ago
Because you can just do that yourself for a challenge. There's an entire category of blindfolded speedruns you can look up online.

Tales of Maj Eyal does a pretty good job of explaining stuff, and has content depth that is surprising.
Tangledeep is pretty good if you're a filthy fucking casual. I actually really enjoyed that one. It's cute.

god this isaac game simply isn't going to be worth playing. too many items and fucking zero explanation for anything... wasn't this a popular game? why the fuck did anyone play this? it's lacking basic features that games have had since NES.... it looks like this game had a fair amount of fan work done with it too.
people's lives must have become really boring to be playing bullshit like this..... man!
[–] ClandenCTrake ago
Yeah fuck it
[–] Seventh_Jim ago
Can't tell you. I avoided it because it looked like hipster bullshit that tacked on the RL features for ironic cool points.
If you actually dig the genre, Jupiter Hell looks like it'll fucking rock once its complete. Currently in early access, so I can't recommend it. Same dudes who did Doom RL before it got copyright raped.

A simpler one may be easier to learn with. For example, try Pixel Dungeon on Android for a while as it's more rudimentary but has most elements of a RL dungeon crawler. Then, after you beat the game a couple times, try switching over to Nethack.
