This is partly true, but anyone who accomplishes enough to become a public figure could have this happen to them, even if they don't ever use social media. This could happen to anyone successful.

Or anyone in college. Saw an engineering scholarship student get his life derailed by a bitch, for turning her down. All of those hamfisted feminist portrayals of men ruining women's lives for spurning them were nothing more than projection
