nothing you do until just before the very end of the game winds up impacting how it ends.

Thanks for your review, @sniper98g.

I've seen many similarly themed sentiments over the last few years whilst scouring reviews of the ME series. Well, especially related to the ME3 ending. Never experienced it myself (haven't completed the game series), but there seems to be a whole lot of hate toward ME3 ending out there.

What do you think? Should I still play through the series? No spoilers please.

I would say: Yes. And as others have said: Play them in order and take your save with you. This'll enable solutions to problems in ME3 that are not possible if you start with a fresh character in 3.

A lot of the disappointment with ME3 (which I share) comes from Bioware overpromising and severely underdelivering in the last 15 minutes of the game. If you aware of that, the entire rest of the series offers a really immersive universe, even if the gameplay mechanics differ from game to game slightly. And yes, that ammo system from 2 onwards was a complete cop-out, especially since the system that was established in gameplay and lore in the first installment and made sense in both contexts.

I've played through Mass Effect four times now in its entirety, and I always start at the very beginning, because it's in essence one giant story, moreso than Witcher.

edit: I think a big part of the reason ME3's ending is so reviled is because everything leading up to it is so good. It's like if at the ending of A Song of Fire and Ice, GRR Martin went like this: "And then a nuclear device was ported onto Westeros and killed everything, except the dragons. Those, it mutated into giant mechano-beasts running on bio fuel."

And the reaction to the ending would be quite similar: "You wot, mate?!"

I won't lie, the ending wasn't what I wanted, but it was an amazing journey to get there. Play it for that reason alone. I don't think I've ever played a game where I cared more about my teammates than in ME. I will always cherish my time as Commander Sheppard.

They are worth a play, but I would just say that you should go into them, understanding that there are going to be some disappointments.

If you do that instead of thinking they are going to be the most amazing games ever (as many of us did) then you will probably enjoy them a lot.

ME1 is a great game, and you should play through it regardless of whether or not you play the next two games. ME2 has some great moments, but I didn't like a lot of the creative decisions they made - particularly with the final boss. ME3 has the best gameplay and a couple of great moments, but a lot of it just sucks.
