Mass Effect series? It would have been so good if they made a sequel after the first one :/
That may be the nostalgia glasses speaking, but after trying ME2 for the first time recently I found it to be not much more than a terrible shooter with a lot of talking.
Yeah in case you didn't guess, I'm telling you to do the first one and forget about the others.
I actually think The Witcher evolved the other way. W3 is a masterfully crafted game with tons of great quality content and decent mechanical quality too. W2 is the same but more limited and very clunky gameplay. W1 is just a story, sidequests and pressing buttons. For someone new to the series I'd actually advise against playing W1 and W2 simply because even though they are decent RPGs, playing them for the story quickly turns out to be a boring chore. W3 can be appreciated fully without knowledge of the previous games in my opinion.

Ah mass effect ! Everytime I decide to play it, I know it's gonna be a long trip, because I must start all over from the very beginning to fully enjoy the story and characters relation and shepard evolution. The first one starts to get old, so some animations, conversations and even voice acting looks pretty akward, but the set up and the universe is really cool to explore. The second is my favorite, but I'm more an action type of gamer, and this one was design to turn into actions. Switching from the first to the second is a blast, control are more fluids, animations and dialogue way better, but the RPG style is a bit taken away. There's still some exploration, and alternative mission with characters to talk to though. And when recovering with your partners, you got that "just like old times" feeling which did give me the goosebumps. And the third is the conclusion to it all. It's imperative you install the new endings DLC (it's free), without it you'll get the first ones we had to support, and be like "what ? ... that's it ?" which was very infuriating ! The DLC provide at least a bit more to the conclusion with extra cinematics, which is less painfull to support.

My two cents on ME:
ME1 was a great game that had a few minor flaws. It was a great fun and original RPG experience. The things people didn't like were game mechanics issues, like the fact that the mako was clunky, the inventory was a bit difficult to navigate, there was one combination of a gun with certain mods that let you fire forever.
ME2 fixed the minor flaws of ME1 with a sledgehammer. Mako was clucky, no more vehicles. inventory difficult to navigate, we've removed the inventory. One particular weapon/mod combo was OP, we've drastically cut the number of weapons, removed all mods and added an ammo system that doesn't make any sense. To me, the end result of all the "streamlining" was to turn it from an RPG into just a shooter.
ME3 brought it back to being more of an RPG, but was disappointing because the story kind of dropped off. I basically think it was a product of being over hyped. They had said early on that "if you play through all three games the decisions you made in the first two games will have a big impact on the third game". That was a major disappointment for most people, as nothing you do until just before the very end of the game winds up impacting how it ends.
Overall I'm glad I played the series, but it definitely has some flaws and disappointments that prevent it from being a true masterpiece.

Thanks for your review, @sniper98g.
I've seen many similarly themed sentiments over the last few years whilst scouring reviews of the ME series. Well, especially related to the ME3 ending. Never experienced it myself (haven't completed the game series), but there seems to be a whole lot of hate toward ME3 ending out there.
What do you think? Should I still play through the series? No spoilers please.

I would say: Yes. And as others have said: Play them in order and take your save with you. This'll enable solutions to problems in ME3 that are not possible if you start with a fresh character in 3.
A lot of the disappointment with ME3 (which I share) comes from Bioware overpromising and severely underdelivering in the last 15 minutes of the game. If you aware of that, the entire rest of the series offers a really immersive universe, even if the gameplay mechanics differ from game to game slightly. And yes, that ammo system from 2 onwards was a complete cop-out, especially since the system that was established in gameplay and lore in the first installment and made sense in both contexts.
I've played through Mass Effect four times now in its entirety, and I always start at the very beginning, because it's in essence one giant story, moreso than Witcher.
edit: I think a big part of the reason ME3's ending is so reviled is because everything leading up to it is so good. It's like if at the ending of A Song of Fire and Ice, GRR Martin went like this: "And then a nuclear device was ported onto Westeros and killed everything, except the dragons. Those, it mutated into giant mechano-beasts running on bio fuel."
And the reaction to the ending would be quite similar: "You wot, mate?!"

I won't lie, the ending wasn't what I wanted, but it was an amazing journey to get there. Play it for that reason alone. I don't think I've ever played a game where I cared more about my teammates than in ME. I will always cherish my time as Commander Sheppard.

They are worth a play, but I would just say that you should go into them, understanding that there are going to be some disappointments.
If you do that instead of thinking they are going to be the most amazing games ever (as many of us did) then you will probably enjoy them a lot.

ME1 is a great game, and you should play through it regardless of whether or not you play the next two games. ME2 has some great moments, but I didn't like a lot of the creative decisions they made - particularly with the final boss. ME3 has the best gameplay and a couple of great moments, but a lot of it just sucks.

I think you can find some mods/files to enhance ME1 (which is still my favorite).
It was such a fun game, I remember exploring every inch of every planet with the Mako and wiping out every single enemy I could find!
You really have to play them all in the proper order to enjoy them. I remember an article about the sound design where they used slowed-down tunes of the first episode in the final act in order to trigger some nostalgia in the player's mind.Great stuff.

I found this mod. It looks really good. Is this the one you mean?
[–] Victoria_Reddit 0 points 1 point 1 point (+1|-0) ago
I think it's the one! Play with it modded will help smooth the wrinkles of the game's old age.
Now you got me motivated, I think I'll do it again this week!

Funny- the Witcher series has been compared to the Mass Effect series so much that I want to play through Witcher now.
Playing ME 1 and 2 and importing those saved games into 3 is important. Getting a good ending from ME3 would be very difficult otherwise. For instance (spoiler)

I've never played any of the Witcher games, but I've been thinking about picking up the new one. Should I play the first two before I jump into 3?

Well, all I can do is give my gaming experience opinion, which is an unequivocal yes!
I reckon you'll get a much better understanding, experience, and feel of the Witcher world, Geralt's back story, and heh heh, why so many folks seem to kinda hate on Triss in Witcher 3. :)

Well, after I finish Alien Isolation, I shall go after the Witcher series.

A bit of a warning, the stories are good in the first two but to me and many others, the combat was bad or sluggish. In the first one the combat is just time clicks to get a combo and done. Second is better but sluggish, third is amazing. I just read the wiki and was just fine.

I wonder if my laptop is up to the challenge.
