I want another Metroid with the engine of Metroid III for SNES. That game was perfection. Everything after were just imitations based on its outline.

Beat it back when it came out, but I think the original for GameBoy is the better game, for it's atmosphere and possibly nostalgia.

Fusion was alright and Zero Mission came close but all of the hand holding seriously irritated me. I want to get lost and have to figure out which way to go, not be told to "Press A to JUMP!" or "let me paint this giant X on the section you need to go to that's one room over." Metroid III told a story without having to break every ten minutes for another hour long cut-scene.

Have you played Axiom Verge? It's the closest game to Metroid 3 I've ever played. And probably the only thing we'll see like it.

But if you look it up and like what you see don't get it just yet. It looks like it's going to be free on the Epic Games store in a few weeks.

Can I make this work on Linux hassle-free?

And there's always the "Metroidvania" series (Castlevania SoTN and several Game Boy Advance sequels).
