Thats what drove me up the wall with Doom 3 - Especially as i had just played through F3AR at the time which was utterly fucking epic i mean that fucking game creeped the shit out of me like doom 3 should have and on top of that there is something inherently unsatisfying about launching a rocket at someone indoors, missing, hitting a desk, and still finding a fucking clipboard mouse pencils and completely untouched computer moniter.

Fear was just as much fun to backtrack through the level destroying every fucking thing you can as it was to play forwards.

This is compared to 1996, playing doom 2, and one particular part of one level had you walking through an outdoor raised area and then into an open... frame thing, to go into a small room that was well lit up... until you picked up the key that was in it. CLUNK snort snort, snort snort i turn around and get a very decent jump scare as one of the first properly resolveable shadows that i remember seeing in a game showing me 3 imps coming around the corner.

Anyhow... later that night. Im half asleep with bedroom light off, didnt notice my dad come up the hallway. CLICK nothing but shadow in doorway. Another doom based jumpscare about 6 hours after i stopped playing it.... wasnt that scary a game but it was about as immersive as you got back then.
