It's not the real source code from Blizzard, it's one guy that "reverse-engineered" the game. I didn't read the process on how he did it, but the point is it isn't the original code.

tl;dr the Japanese version shipped with a file that it wasn't supposed to- one that mapped out in detail how all the code worked, how it was structured, etc. The US version also had a debug copy hidden/left in it that offered some keyholes to peep through.

Interesting, didn't know that.

Why exactly is the code valuable ?

It takes a lot of time for a skilled team to write a new engine. Also they might want to keep certain tech exclusive to their game to help increase sales. This is what makes projects like quake or half-life so important because they wanted people to have cheap or free access to their source material.

It's not really valuable in a commercial sense because anyone dumb enough to release a modified Diablo would be sued. Plus it's over 20 years old.

Diablo is a cult classic though. Having the full source code available is going to fascinate retro gamers and enthusiasts. It gives the person who did it a lot of street cred in that community too.

Most significantly, it means the entire game is entirely open to modification. When software is already compiled, it's often practically impossible to change even very minor things like one line of text. With the source code, however, you can make whatever changes you like and then compile the software for others to run. It means suitably motivated people could add new maps, missions, stories, weapons, whatever you can think of. They can fix bugs, add improved textures, etc. They can even completely reskin everything and make it about fairies and bunnies, constructing an entirely new game based on the Diablo engine. It's a (once) AAA title that any guy with a home PC can now build his own game on. It's old enough that this is doable.

It's a shit ton of work still though so we'll have to see what people with an awful lot of time and creativity do with it.

There's source code and machine code. The source code is what people write to make a program that is then compiled into machine code that the computer uses. Source code is usually kept private unless it's an open source project. Machine code is what the user gets and is difficult to hack or reverse engineer. With the source code, programmers can now easily edit and remake the game and it's mechanics.

If you are looking for a fun Diablo tribute though, check out Path of Exile.

The original code? I suspect so it is not repacked and sold as another project.

Reading the title I thought that Activision Blizzard had gone mad and they would have officially released it. But nope, no cows flying outside either and things are just ordinary. Very unlikely that they would do something nice.

That's what AutoIt was for ... write your own bot to watch your health and chug pots when it got low.

Used to dunk Diablo with a staff of apocalypse, nab the loot, and repeat. Good times.

I wonder if it's got a comment as good as the fast inverse square in Quake.

Edit: no comments in reverse engineered code.

This is indeed one of the few disadvantages to not having the actual source code.

I wonder if this means that Diablo can now grow a modding community like DOOM has...
