There honestly isn't enough advancement in tech. The PS4 Pro makes a pretty big leap when you talk about 4K graphics and 10bit (HDR) color. If you look between the PS1/2/3, if Sony were to release a PS5 now, it would be no where near the technological jump. Same with Microsoft and the exBox lineup.

Don't get me wrong, Going to PCs for a second, a GeForce 1080 Ti is noticeably better than a 970 ... but the 970 from three years ago is still pretty damn good. You'll notice the different, but overall game-play believably isn't really impacted that much. (A 970M can still play the first Tomb Raider reboot in 4k, and Rise of the Tomb Raider in 2k).

Both Sony and Microsoft want the real next gen: super realistic graphics hardware. Like, uncanny valley level graphics .. and I think we will get there, but it is a bit away for both nVidia and AMD.

The other big thing that's missing: 120Hz UHD. Right not most PC gamers have gone back to ultra-wide regular HD monitors because the higher refresh rate it worth way more than 4k resolution. For fast paced games, it affects game play in multi-player.

Right now if you want 120Hz from a home console to a TV, you're going to need special TVs and multiple HDMI or DisplayPorts. I think HDMI 2.0a is still limited to 60HZ (although it allows 10-bit). We're going to need the next HDMI standard before we can do 120Hz between consoles and TVs. Even for PC gamers, there are very few 120Hz/4k setups and they often involve SLI cards and super expensive monitors.

Meh. Next gen is VR man. Even last gen games look fucking incredible in VR. "Next gen graphics" just bring us prettier games with the same mechanics and gameplay we've had for the past 15-20 years.

VR is a gimmick and a waste of money.

I believe AR will take off soon, especially with the release of Vuzix's Blade AR glasses.

Right, once VR advances to the size of a pair of sunglasses TVs will be obsolete.

It isn't that there's not enough advancement in tech. It's that sony and microsoft don't want to go broke again selling hardware at massive losses in a competition to corner the market. Especially when you consider that the hardware is going to need to be almost identical anyway if you want decent ports to your system, or any games at all.

OTOH if sony or MS built a system from the ground up for VR, THAT would be very interesting.

I agree. And it seems that tech advancement in gaming has been slowing down as of late. I'm wondering if it has to do with developers just not having the time or resources to take advantage of bleeding edge tech. I have a 3 year old PC with a AMD 390 and I don't see myself upgrading for probably another 3 years. Insane graphics don't mean much to me. It's going to be a long time before I see a game that is unplayable.

Im still rocking a 970m in 1080p on my MSI Ghost Pro from a few years ago and it still rips through games with ease on the highest settings, albiet at 1080p. My point matches his in saying there is not really a need for new hardware unless you want insane resolutions, but this does nothing for actual gameplay, much like the leaps in software tech that were made when Half Life 1 came out and then HL2 and so on.

I recently upgraded my gaming laptop which has a 970M in it:

They just announced end of support for the PS4. They literally have no idea what they're doing.

Yeah that 2 to 1 ownership of PS4 to Xbox One owners really shows they are clueless.

Release a damn PSP3 already Sony

And make it use standard SD cards for storage. None of this proprietary Vita cards crap. I swear the Vita would be doing a million times better if they released it with standard SD Card support at launch

This! The memory cards were ridiculously expensive.

Thankfully we eventually got a SD2VITA adaptor. For $50 you can now have a 250GB SD card instead of just the 32GB official mem card

They are too afraid of pirates cracking the system, that's why they went with the shitty psv cards that still cost 100$ for a large capacity card and guess what the system still got cracked open, again these corporations need to stop worrying about a minority or people, people are going to steal you're games and you can try to stop them but you are only pissing off paying customers, the psv is big in Japan because local devs see the potential in the system.

If you don't mind old games then have a go at one of these

Personally I think older games work better on handhelds just because of the screensize and simpler input.

I use my PSP 1001 for pretty much all things emulation. Very useful when your stuck without a laptop somewhere :D

VITA has a lot of emulators and even access to PSP ones via Adreniline

I made a piboy out of a Gameboy DMG but the only screen that would fit is Total shit, unplayable.

They still make games for the vita. Albeit mostly japanese roleplaying games..

Nice little device; especially for the large OLED screen. It will probably be the last handheld gaming system I buy though. Seems like those handheld pc’s are the way of the future.

True. That's the reason the VITA got the nicknames Weeb-Machine and Nep-Machine. Though sadly they're stopping production of physical carts.

Steam's android app allows you to sync a controller up with your phone's bluetooth. Get a mount to physically attach your phone to your controller and you've got good mobile gaming, including lots of emulation options.

Goyim you've had more than enough entertainment out of this purchase. It's long overdue that you give us some more shekels.

of course they want to keep the fans happy saying that the console is not dead yet but i think they know that they have reached their peak for this console and that's why there are ps5 devkits out there already in possession of some devs

i love my ps4 but this console its not a true upgrade to the ps3. it cant hardly play games at 60 fps at 1080P

rumor has it that the next console could be ryzen powered, but yeah this will be my last console (i think) since steam and gog are enough for the type low budget games that i like

“it cant hardly play games at 60 fps at 1080P”

It’s not that easy. Higher quality textures, texture filtering, shadows, lighting, particle effects, etc. They aren’t simply upscaling PS3 games. Look at GTA V on both and tell me there isn’t a graphical leap.

It’s not that easy.

Yeah, they have to leave a huge chunk of overhead for the streaming shit nobody asked for.

I’ve said it before around here. I’m all but done with modern gaming. Between then politics and forced diversity to the point where the openings say it was devoloped by a diverse team it’s non sense. I’ll stick with my old retro games and maybe some second hand or borrowed new stuff. I have the money to spend but I don’t want to further any more agendas.

All these talks about technological leaps are nothing but smokes and mirrors. The same goes for PC gaming, even though the PC is the only platform where I do most of my gaming these days, there is a culture of hype about owning the latest GPU and resolution. This is nothing but masturbation for techno nerds who only care about hardware but have no knowledge whatsoever about video games, or if they do it's only a superficial one and mostly play AAA garbage declined games. Games are not about ultra realistic graphics, they are about challenge, your decisions impacting the world and the world reacting to it. It's supposed to be organic, nothing that we have today can even begin to touch something like UW.

So no, new console hardware, new PC hardware, resolution or any other gimmick doesn't get me excited, if anything I see it as a childish industry for manchildren who have refused to grow up and need their dopamine hit by owning the latest toy. And who made it ok for these garbage games to have file sizes over 80GB. It seems like games these days are taking more harddrive space than ever before without looking the part. Has to be audio.

They just include random data to artificially increase the size.
