THis is actually pretty solid news. These machines are pretty beefy and can turn them into bitcoin farming now. LoL.

These machines are pretty beefy

They're really not. The PS4 has a 1.6 GHz AMD Jaguar series APU, with an onboard 800 MHz Radeon GPU that's roughly equivalent to an R7 360. Pretty low-end stuff, even when it was new. You could probably GPU mine on the PS4 Pro, since I understand its APU is equipped with a much newer Polaris GPU, but you're still not going to come out ahead mining Bitcoin on a pre-Ryzen AMD CPU.

Simple question. Just to put things in perspective, What kind of setup would you need to mine 1/2 BTC per month? How much would the equipment cost?

oh bullshit. the thing would melt in 5 minutes. besides that you might as well just leave it on doing nothing and save power. youre not earning anything.

Clarification, using a tethered array of them to handle it. Air force is notorious for grabbign machines like this and mass installing linux for farm processing.

I have been waiting for this! If it works, it might be time to pick up a couple used ones, you might want to replace the thermal paste though, otherwise they will just overheat and shut off

Many reasons.

The main benefit to this will lead to is the ability to unlock the backwards compatibility option, which believe it or not is basically an option that could be enabled with the click of a button.

In the hacking world the question usually is "why not?"

There's no need for reason to hack something.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3_cluster

On March 28, 2010, Sony announced it would be disabling the ability to run other operating system with the v3.21 update, due to security concerns about OtherOS.[30] This update would not affect any existing supercomputing clusters, due to the fact that they are not connected to PSN and would not be forced to update. However, it would make replacing the individual consoles that compose the clusters very difficult if not impossible, since any newer models with the v3.21 or higher would not support Linux installation directly.
