Did you one better, it's actually multiplayer already.

They look ok, a little flat imo. That destruction asset doesn't look really good.I think it would be better to spawn in a bunch of smaller asteroids with a nice dust particle effect (maybe just adding a particle effect would look better already). Any reason you're not using real 3d models? Imo that would look tons better, as you could have them spinning around which would sell the "3dness" a lot better. You could do things like having a broken piece of asteroid fly towards the player or in any random direction. There are really nice assets too for cutting meshes at runtime.

I just had an idea why your asteroids look flat. Are you using only one light? Read up on the 3 point lighting system.

Here's some stuff I made: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnZpK2QmYxg&list=UUaGrf36ANZjQU40DZmq9_9A

Well it's a 2D game so I don't really have any 3d models in it at all right now, though I did consider it for the asteroids. I think you're right about the particle effect too.

In the screenshots/gif there's only one directional light hitting the asteroids. There are other sources of light emission in the game as well, like explosions, engines, etc. I'm considering adding a little headlamp to the player character as well. Trying to find a balance between "the darkness of space" and having things look nice has been an ongoing process.

And hot damn that's a nice shotgun! Reminds me of the one they just added to PUBG recently. When you close the shotgun with a flip, is that all physics based or is it an animation that gets triggered from the gesture?

It's an animation. I tried doing it physics based but the barrels would wiggle around slightly when you moved the gun.

Light never comes just from one direction, it's scattered. That's why your asteroids look a little one dimensional. Doesn't matter if your game is 2d, that's just the camera setup. Unity does everything in 3d anyway.
