Best indie game I've played recently was Hollow Knight, but there are plenty of non-AAA developers that are pretty good. Obsidian has made some great recent isometric RPGs (like Tyranny and Wasteland 2). Firaxis' take on the XCOM series was also pretty fucking awesome (XCOM 2 with the War of the Chosen expansion is one of the best strategy games I've played in a very long time). Creative Assembly is also pumping out Total War games, and despite the constant grumbling of the older fans who prefer the historical settings, Total War: Warhammer was a blast to play and has a huge amount of replayability. I wouldn't consider any of those companies "AAA," and none of the games would be considered to be marketable to the mainstream, but they're all worth picking up and playing. Don't give up on gaming just because the large developers like EA, Ubisoft and Bethesda have long since lost their way.
