They mistook an announcement for the original fallout being free for a day as a shill attempt for the free-to-pay fallout shelter.

I'm not sure, this game requires a Pentium at 90Mhz, 16 Megabytes of memory, and almost 600 Megabytes (!) of storage... I don't think my machine is beefy enough.

in 97, my machine was a compaq presario Intel 333mhz with 32MB of RAM and an 8GB hard drive. It also rocked a shitty ATi graphics chip that couldn't actually render 3d properly. I remember having to delete a bunch of files to install this game to make room for this monster. It was well worth the effort.

For the record, Bethesda had nothing to do with Fallout 1 & 2. Fallout 1 was made by the Interplay team that became Black Isle Studios, and Fallout 2 was made by Black Isle Studios. Bethesda then bought Fallout from Interplay and screwed the franchise with Fallout 3. Obsidian, with many people formerly from Black Isle Studios, made Fallout: New Vegas with the crappy engine that Bethedsa used for Fallout 3.

Bethesda then bought Fallout from Interplay and screwed the franchise with Fallout 3.

You skipped a bunch of history. Like Interplay making Fallout Tactics, and Fallout Brotherhood of Steel for the Xbox. Tactics was alright, would have been better if BlackIsle wasn't kicked to the curb and was allowed to make it an RPG instead of an OK squad tactical game. FBOS was complete trash. Interplay was hemorrhaging cash and made matters worse by trying to whore out its IP instead of making good games. Then there was Van Buren. Which was the code name given to Interplay's fallout 3. The design docs and tech demo was given to Todd Howard, whom immediately decided to make Oblivion with guns.

The lawsuit was over Interplay selling Fallout titles after they sold the rights for Fallout 3- whatever. Bethesda argued that Interplay was violating anti-trust by actively developing a Fallout title (Fallout Online), and selling older Fallout titles in little combination packs, while pretending Bethesda had permission to make Fallout 3 and what not. The case settled out of court, I believe. I think Interplay sold off all rights to Bethesda because IP just didn't have the cash to fight a long legal battle and Bethesda knew it.

You're absolutely correct. Interplay was mismanaged into the ground, and they sold off their IP piecemeal to prolong the fall. Baldur's Gate 3 and the real Fallout 3 (Van Buren) were casualties of Herve Caen's incompetence.
