All this obsession for super high quality textures, and no time spend on the actual story or game play.

All of the games I play most frequently these days can fit in less than a gig.

The source file for Overgod is 1.7MB, and Gem Tower Defense is only 415KB! Hell, you can get the LNP to Dwarf Fortress in only 150MB.

Why does DOTA need a 3GB patch every few days now? I call bullshit.

Because they add new models, textures, particles, and shaders..

Shit, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is under 100MB and is a great game. And there's plenty of old DOS games that are still amazing too. All the shit from Microprose's or Lucasart's heydays still stands up today.

I think you are making the wrong complaint here. Games have always gotten bigger in size and in detail, hell it's the main driving force towards making everything in your computer bigger and cheaper.

You should be complaining that your shitty internet is too damn slow or that you can't afford that big SSD or fast graphics card. All the crap you talk about 'bloat' is bullshit. Bloat is unused features, the high-res textures and models are used (if you have a half-decent setup).

Are you really asking game developers to create custom 'trimmed down' games for your shitty setup? I'm glad they don't! They are the main reason you have the space and speed you have now.

So I'll just focus on the bloat bit: most people don't have a discrete GPU. Most people can't run the textures. So right off the bat, it's bloat.

Then technically, it's been bloat ever since Mipmaps were introduced.
Mipmaps are the reason you're able to change texture quality in all of your games.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mipmap

It's not that they're adding separate higher resolution textures. They just increased the resolution of the base textures.
This has been the case for each generation.

It's not just textures either. It's the same for models which are getting much more detailed, animation systems which are getting much more complex/detailed, audio files which are increasing in count and at the same time getting larger with higher bit rates and sample rates, more complex shaders and physics which perform more complex calculations, more code to process due to a more robust and intricate game engine.
It's natural for games to get bigger.

It's not always due to real progress either. Lack of compression methods can have a huge impact on a games size. I think it was Titanfall which had uncompressed audio files accounting for a huge chunk of the games size.
Yea. Look at this shit: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/132922-Titanfall-Dev-Explains-The-Games-35-GB-of-Uncompressed-Audio

35GB of the 48GB game is uncompressed audio.

People like you hold the gaming industry back.

There are plenty of old titles that are entertaining. Go play those with your old computer.

Their target market does have dedicated GPU.

I don't think that you can call it bloat, games are designed to run at the optimum setting.

Just because it is 'bloat' in your particular case does not mean that it would be bloat to everyone else. In fact if I downloaded a watered down game with no high-res textures I'd be pissed off about it. I think the word bloat would refer to something generally unused and annoying, like browser toolbars and antivirus bundles. A lot of gamers will expect high-res textures, so I don't agree that 'bloat' applies here.

Big game developers will typically try to max out the graphics as much as possible and outdo the competition. They know that a large portion of gamers want the eye candy and have pockets deep enough to afford it, they have to aim their game at them because they are the ones that buy it off the shelves at launch, which keeps investors happy.

10gb is honestly shooting a little low here. Even good ol' TF2 is well over that these days.

It's not supposed to be that big. They went full retarded like with a medical cabinet that had so many polygons it lagged the game for many people. The endless stream of unoptimized textures for "extras" like hats amounts to poor workmanship.

I remember the initial install from disc was 2 GB. Somewhere along the line the game got too big for me to keep updated anymore and I switched to console gaming. Trouble is, physical media doesn't mean much over there anymore either.

I haven't had a primary HDD under 1TB (yes, even including my current M.2 1TB 960 PRO) since probably 2004. My media server has been 32TB Raid10 since 2011. Not really sure why you're complaining here, unless you're a laptop gamer but in that case you're just a filthy casual anyway. ;)

I live in rural BFE with 3 options for internet:
- 150/50 Cable
- 1GB/1GB Fiber
- 25/5 DSL

Even modern satellite can do 25/15.

Rimworld doesn't have DLC, all of that crap is just to get your name in the game and support the single guy developing it.
