I use a PS1 controller. I don't use it often, but it usually works - recognised by the kernel and there's no lag, etc.

Logitech - works great out of the box, never had an issue in Steam or any other gaming software. Bonus points for not keeping the peasant hardware industry afloat.

I'd say an Xbox controller would give you the fewest issues. Other controllers seem to work most of the time, but some games expect an Xbox controller.

I've had no issues at all with both wired and wireless Xbox 360 controllers.

Do you happen to know if this would apply to 3rd party Xbox 360 controllers? I'm assuming they would be the same for support or would there be differences?

They should run on the exact same drivers. I used a wired 360 controller on my (Windows) PC until recently, and the official Microsoft drivers for 360 controllers ran fine.
