Generation 5 had the worst designs and they were pretty boring imo. I thought the transition to 3D was a nice way to breath life back into the franchise. I also liked how Sun and Moon was more offbeat, the copy/paste formula of Gen 3 was getting stale.

I still miss contests and normal gyms... And pokeathlon... It would have been interesting to see what it would be like if gyms weren't mandatory. open national pokedex...

Also want an Orange Islands game.... I know that's far fetched but I stand by it. Fuck the collateral damage. Too much water? Not enough for me! Give me Surf and the fishing rods early and set me free!

It would be cool for it to incorporate minigames into the gyms like the anime did. Now we can add Orange Islands regional pokemon variants! I also like the idea of islands for specific purposes. berry island, cold island, city island, powerplant island, fossil island, forest island, jungle island, breeding/cycling island, etc.

Also please stop it with "oh noes we gots to save the world from evil peoples and stronk ubermons" it's fine to just beat on bikers, goons, gang bangers/thugs, an evil syndicate is not necessary.

Yeah, they got really stingy with the post game content. Last time I remember it being fun was the Battle Frontier in gen 3.

I wouldn't be opposed to a 3D update of gen 1 that includes Orange Islands post game.

To be fair, the over arching story always was about an elite gang of criminals looking to exploit the powers of a legendary, even going back to the first game with Team Rocket and Mewtwo, it just took more of a back seat then. Idk, I just enjoyed Sun/Moon because it felt less formulaic, Black/White felt more like a romhack of Diamond/Pearl.
