I got small kids I want to be nostalgic and live vicariously through. They like to paint, they like to build things and they like "small things" (I'm looking at you, Shopkins). I was thinking they would enjoy building and painting models but holy buttfucks did 40k get pricey in the last 15 years.
Now, I have been thinking about getting a bag of Army Men, spray primer and some cheap model paints. But metal would be more fun. Back in the day you could still get pewter shot to melt on the stove and pour into molds. But I think that's illegal or something now.
Any suggestions for low budget model + painting hobbies a kindergartener could do?
Searching "child modeling" kinda backfired.

I second the Pathfinder idea. There really is a limit to how much the money damage can be, and if they get really into it, they...read a shitload, and get decent at doing low level math quickly and accurately. Far preferable to the vagaries of Magic card day trading.

And I've no experience with it myself, but I've heard good things about: http://www.nothankyouevil.com
