You really don't have to start by saying you don't support slavery. The only people that would assume you do are the same that think being white makes you a racist by default, and they won't believe you anyway. And they're not on Voat :)

Also, the Confederate flag did NOT stand for slavery. It stood for many, many things, slavery being only a small part of the bigger picture. Many of those things it stood for are actually very good as well.

Yes, what a reasonable and well informed decision by Apple. Don't like something? Hey, let's all just bury our heads in the sand and pretend the flag never existed. Oh, and those Nazi and Communist flags in other games are absolutely fine, as they just help to contribute to the game's realism. I guess Apple also forgot to remove all the movies that feature a Confederate flag, they should really get on that. /s

This is like going back and removing the word "nigger" from any media in our past because it's too offensive. Yes, it's a horrible term but whitewashing history is even worse.

Well, they (the SJW) demand that literature teachers give trigger warning before having them read Mark Twain or, even better, that they avoid those books altogether.

[–] Bu11DawgNC 0 points 91 points (+91|-0) ago

This is getting absurd. I don't like the confederate flag, but how are we going to avoid repeating mistakes if we completely scrub history? This is getting to fahrenheit 451 levels here.

[–] CONGLOM-O 0 points 14 points (+14|-0) ago  (edited ago)

And further down the slippery slope we go. Why not just ban and burn all the books that make reference to a Confederate flag. We may as well keep going and ban racist tattoos as well. Just throw anyone in jail with one or cut it out of their skin. You can never be too careful and that pesky freedom of speech thing might hurt someone.

They would love to openly burn books, but removing them doesn't cause the commotion that burning them does.

I can understand stores who really aren't in the business flags of all kind not bothering to market it. But really? it's a historical flag! Games about the civil war are historical at least this is bullshit. So what we're banning all ww2 games because holy shit there's a nazi flag?

[–] well_golly 0 points 8 points (+8|-0) ago  (edited ago)

I just want to come right out and say that I fly the 46-star flag, because it was the final flag that flew entirely within an era when women couldn't vote. Fuck those suffragettes!

Try banning that flag, Apple, et. al. - But I know Apple won't ban it, and do you know why? Because just like me, Apple is deeply opposed to women's so-called "right" to vote. The 19th Amendment was an abomination, and the sooner we repeal it the better!

tl;dr: If someone bans the sale of my beloved 46-star flag, I will lose my shit completely.

Didn't they do this recently with "To kill a mockingbird"? It was because the author was resist. Forgetting that by today's standards everyone was resist back then. As someone from the south, who grew up learning a lot about the civil war, look l claiming the flag represents slavery is akin to claiming the north never had slaves. Also fuck Ruthefurd B Hays.

Actually banning "To Kill A Mockingbird" over racism is pretty fucking dumb. The whole book is against racism and trying to tell people how horrid racism is. Thug Notes does a pretty good job of breaking the whole thing down.

To be fair, this is also a business decision: to not host the application because of the recent backlash. It's just a virtual marketplace versus a physical marketplace.

They should also ban the letter 'H' because Hitler uses that letter. HITLER! How can you support that?!

And number 1 and 8 and any combination of those, because those stand for Adolf Hitler.

The citizens, for the most part, are completely normal people. The government is behind this nonsense for sure, with it they kill 2 birds with one stone.
1: remove evidence that revolution is possible, rewrite history to produce max sheeple numbers. 2: cover the TPP outcry, enough stupid people yell and no one will hear anything.

[–] finally_anonymous 7 points 17 points (+24|-7) ago

Ok, I'm in FULL support of removing Confederate flags as icons, but it's a totally different thing when it's not meant to be pride. In other words, if it's being shown as part of history or in context with the Civil War somehow, that's not offensive. Bad things may have happened in history, but that doesn't mean we have to take offense when trying to learn from or about it.

0

[–] Sharossh 0 points 14 points (+14|-0) ago

But at what point do we as a people look at flag and say it's history out weights anything else it could/can stand for? Just because some find it offensive should it be removed? Could not the case be made for the removal of any flag based on how it is viewed by others. I don't have a dog in this fight as I don't fly any flag, it just seems wrong to be to tell others what they can do with their property.

The big thing about this flag, larger than what this thread re:Apple is about, is that the 'State' is sponsoring this symbol. That is the difference.

[–] LongestUsernameEver1 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

You don't have the right to not be offended.

If someone wants to fly the flag that is their choice. The corporations however also have the right to not sell it if that's what they feel they should do. Sadly I think everyone just jumping on the cool kids wagon now.

This whole controversy began because the confederate flag was being flown at a government building, not at someones private property

0

[–] Chance 0 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago

Just saying "that's not offensive" isn't enough reason to remove it. You can't stifle something just because it hurts your fee-fees. Although in general I definitely agree with you.

I am however against the flag being flown over courthouses and other government sanctioned buildings. The difference there is we have tax dollars going into that as endorsement.

-1

[–] finally_anonymous 2 points -1 points (+1|-2) ago

Yeah, there is a difference between just being offended by something and that something representing something bigger. For example, if somebody just calls a black person a nigger, you have to realize that person is an asshole and move on, realizing that people are working on eliminating that from society. However, if that person is also running a business that refuses to hire black people, then maybe you should stop and have a chat with that person, or at least create some action that will help the situation.

Even when it's meant to be pride, I don't feel it's my responsibility to prohibit that. I disagree with it, but it's their prerogative to use that symbol, whatever their intent in doing so is. Whether it be pride, distancing themselves from the government, or just plain racism, it's up to them to choose whether to wave their views in the wind. Just like it's my choice and right to do any number of things that may offend them.

It is even worse when the Confederate Flag is the unambiguous symbol of the Confederacy. If you had to represent the Confederacy using a single image, how else would you do it? Confederate soldiers dressed in grey? It's incredibly useful from a teaching perspective, as the article mentions in reference to some of the more educational games. And hey, I would assume that the Confederacy usually loses in most of these games anyways.

The point isn't to take away free speech, though. It's to start chipping away at a mindset that causes lots of unjust problems for certain groups of people.

Then I guess we should also ban all Soviet flags because they massacred large parts of the Eastern Europe population, right? And the Che Guevara shirts because he did some pretty horrible things. Maybe ban the British flag because they subjected huge portions of the planet to their colonial rule. While we're at it, we should get rid of everything relate to Catholicism since they killed a lot of Protestants a long time ago and we don't want to offend Protestants. But maybe we should also ban all Protestant stuff since we don't want to offend Catholics. There was also that one time the Mongol hordes raped and pillaged their way across entire continents so let's ban the country of Mongolia.

Shouldn't come as a surprise from Apple, the company that brought you emojis with different skin colors, because with just the racially neutral ones you're not thinking about racial identity all the time.
