I'm old, and prefer "owning" my games. I'm not a fan of paying money for a license to play a game. I also hate having to run a client to access "my" games. It's just a level of DRM that I disagree with, so most of my purchases come from GoG.com or the Humble Bundle Store. This way if the service ever fails, or a distribution license expires, or a game gets pulled for whatever reason, I always have my copy.

I'm the same way with console games, I always buy the physical release if it is available.

Steam does have some games with varying levels of DRM requirements including some without it. It's up to the publisher on what is used. Here's a list http://steam.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_DRM-free_games

I'd imagine most of those games without any DRM are available from GoG and/or Humble Bundle stores too :)
