Frozen synapse. It's a top down simultaneous semi turn-based squad shooting game. You have as long as you want to give your guys extremely detailed orders, 5 seconds of simulated play at a time- you go here, then duck, you go here and aim that way, you shoot a rocket over there, etc... you can also simulate the turn before submitting it to see how it plays out, and even give pretend orders to the enemy guys too if you think you can predict what they'll do, and see how that turns out. Then when your plans are perfect, you lock in your decision, the other guy locks in his decision, and you see what happens in real time for that five second chunk. Assuming you both have guys left alive, repeat from the top, taking the game five seconds at a time. There are a lot of gameplay modes, the maps are randomly generated, there's a fair amount of nuance to master, and it's a lot of fun to get in the head of your opponent and figure out what he'll do and plan around it, knowing he's trying to do the same to you. There's something satisfying about launching a rocket to a completely empty spot, then see you correctly predicted the other guy would move his guys there to avoid where he thought your rocket was going to go. There's a demo on steam, and I guess it automatically comes with two copies. The asynchronous mode integrates pretty well into the steam client; you'll get a notification in steam when the next turn is ready.
They also made the sequel, except about a violent version of football, which I haven't played, but looks alright.
Also, wargaming.net, before they were all about "World of <whatever>", made a pretty cool game called Massive Assault Network 2. It's a turn-based medium-scale hex based army game, with an intersting system where you get control of certain provinces but only reveal control when you choose to. It's got a pretty generous demo you could try out with a friend. It will run on a potato and looks like it too, but there's a lot of depth to it.

I'm a big fan of Frozen Synapse for PC. I really like the co-op gameplay. I haven't tried the mobile version, but I was eyeing that the other day as well. I haven't heard of Massive Assault Network 2, but it sounds cool. Thank you for the suggestions!
