Their site is extremely awful. The game is a standard $60 for the full thing, but you can buy ships for real money (they are also buyable in-game). It is somewhat P2W but its not like Ubishaft or Squenix; Star Citizen actually needs the money as its how they fund the development of the game, because they have no publisher funding/controlling them.

So I take it you create an account and then buy one of the starter packages, then completing missions gets you in game money to purchase other ships and stuff? Also, what is insurance?

1) Yes. I think of it like War thunder, you pay if you wanna avoid teh grinde. This spoils the game for me, so I`d never do it (that and I have no money).

2) Insurance is what you buy unless you want to lose your shiny new ship forever after a single bad gunfight ;) Also if you buy a ship with real money, it will always have free insurance, because real moneis is real.

Insurance is exactly what it sounds like. Your ship needs insurance to be recovered. If you run out of insurance on your ship and your ship is blown up/stolen you lose it forever and will have to work your way back up to a new ship.

Yes, and I don't know. I'm not sure exactly what insurance does, never looked into it.
