@AlphaWookie, your comments* have been brought to the modteam's attention, and they do fit the /v/gaming community's definition of harassment: purposeful and sustained bullying against a user or group of users which is highly personal and unrelated to the site. For this reason you have been banned from participating in /v/gaming

*Examples of harassment (both targeted and sustained) in /v/gaming:

Edit: I've always done my best to faithfully enforce the /v/gaming community's rules. Whenever I take action, I back i up with a clear reason and multiple examples when possible (even when removing spam). That said, rules are only a proxy of the community's will, and it's foolish to maintain a rule against the wishes of the community. For this reason I've reversed @AlphaWookie's ban and all (3) of my bans in /v/gaming that only cite harassment as their cause. Please accept my personal apology.

I would like to go one step further and repeal rule 3 entirely, but because /v/gaming's rules belong to the /v/gaming community I have to approach the community with any request to modify the community rules. I've done that here: https://voat.co/v/gaming/comments/1211755

i'm disappointed.

while i disagree with your rule, and while i disagree that mods on a default sub have any right to ban for something like this. (this is voat, not fucking reddit), and while i believe that this action has thrown us down the slippery slope to censorship,

i gotta say

if i'm reading your extended rules correctly,

"If a user is receiving messages or replies which are causing them genuine distress, we will deal with that." (1)

that means the user(s) being targeted would have to complain.

from what i see here:

https://voat.co/v/gaming/comments/1204471/5955518

it doesn't sound like dabork is distressed over alphawookie being a troll, i think he's clearly stating here he couldn't give a shit.

so while alphawookie is totally being a troll, as far as the rules are concerned in this sub as they are, if dabork doesn't care, then it's not harassment.

THAT SAID

this rule is unacceptable, and as YOU say (1), this is a community driven rule model, so as a gamer and a voat v/gaming community member, i say fuck this reddit-style rule in the ass, and get it the fuck out of here.

hurt fee fee safe spaces are for reddit, not voat

you have just made v/gaming into r/gaming. undo the damage by undoing the ban, removing the rule and replacing it with a statement to the effect: voat is not a safe space. if your fee fees are hurt there are plenty of mainstream sites to frequent.

You raise some good points, and I encourage you to speak up in the /v/gaming sticky for review of rule 3: https://voat.co/v/gaming/comments/1209908 /v/gaming's rules are not my creation; they belong to the community and have always been written and maintained with direct feedback from the /v/gaming community.

Did you give this user a warning? How long will the ban last?

Until it's appealed or the rule is repealed, either way. I've not been contacted by this user.

Rule 3 is clearly posted and defined, and there's a strict definition of what constitutes harassment: targeted AND sustained. We constantly put /v/gaming's rules up for community review, and the current sticky is in fact a discussion on what should be done about the harassment rule (the sticky went up before all of this attention fell on me).

hey friend. /v/gaming's modteam will always do what it can to faithfully enforce the community's rules. Those rules are periodically put up for discussion, and no changes are made without the community's direct involvement. That said, rules are only a proxy of the community's will, and the overwhelming feedback of the past few hours has convinced me to reverse all of my bans (3) that include "harassment" as the sole cause. I would like to to one step farther and repeal rule 3 entirely, but I can't do that without the community's approval. I've proposed this action here: https://voat.co/v/gaming/comments/1211755

As always, I appreciate your feedback Laurentius, and hope my actions haven't discouraged you from participating in /v/gaming.

The action or the rule? My place is to serve the community and respect the rules that /v/gaming has implemented for itself. Rule 3 has been up for revision a few times, and has always had universal support (it's actually up for review right this second, prior to any of this comment's attention). The rule itself is clearly written, and its enforcement was followed to the letter, detailed with several clear examples.

Shut up retard.

Banning someone for saying shut up. Few times to the same person? Where the fuck do you think you are you shit eating cunt bitch.

You have to be a huge fucking bitch to think what he did constitutes as harassment and causing distress. Get the fuck out of here.

Thanks for providing the instances of his crimes to display how much of a dumbass you are

/v/gaming's rules belong to the community. They're frequently up for revision, and are maintained with community feedback. This user's actions follow the community's definition of harassment (being sustained and unrelated to /v/gaming). Taking action, I only cited comments he made in /v/gaming, and followed the definition the community has put forward. There's actually been a sticky up for revision of this rule since yesterday to ask what changes if any should be made.
