How about Borderlands 1 and 2? I believe Torchlight 2 has LAN support up to 6, Dying Light has co-op campaign up to 4. If you're looking for something co-op specific, co-optimus has a system picker resource that will let you filter by PC, LAN support; and then sort by user rating.

Co-optimus is one of my favorite sites because while they're slow on breaking news, they're the only site I know that aggregates co-op specific content.

The second site you mentioned is on the tip of my tongue but I can't recall it.

Edit: was is this? http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/game-lists

Forgot all about Dino DDay, time to go spend 30 bucks on copies.

Probably one of my favorite LAN games of all time.

To add to this "bit retro" list: Almost any strategy game supports LAN. AoE, Rise of Nations, CIV, etc.

You'd be pretty hard-pressed to find new games that have LAN support, but here's a good list you can rely on:

  • Unreal Tournament (all of them do, but I'd honestly recommend 2004 above all else.)
  • DOTA 2 (Believe it or not, this game does have LAN support.)
  • CounterStrike (I believe all three versions including 1.6, Source and Global Offensive have LAN support.)
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (I have a feeling the newer games ditched LAN support.)
  • Call of Duty 2 (If you'd rather play a WW2 FPS, this is the one to get. World at War sucked.)
  • StarCraft: Brood War
  • Minecraft
  • Magicka

Also Left 4 Dead 2, which was a lot of fun on LAN. Pretty much any of those source engine games can do it. Probably Chivalry, too. You might still have to be online w/ steam though.

Being online with steam shouldn't be an issue but his charter internet is crap and I don't think 8 of us trying to play a FPS online will work. Maybe it will I just want to have a backup plan.

Call of Duty 4 is a good choice for mid range capabilities. Also Counterstrike but that's an obvious choice.

Crazy hat era TF2 and newer?

We were all looking at overwatch and Ark but decided not to, we're not sure how his crappy charter internet will work with 6-8 people trying to play.
