No, it's particularly quantitative based on popular opinion. A game that is generally well received by the majority can't be "the worst game ever".

You can't say it is not the worst game ever to him, because you obviously can't go into his head and see what he thinks as he plays it. Popular opinion in the 1920s was that great gadsby wasn't a very great book, and it didn't sell well, and popular opinion today, and after WWII is that it is a classic. Were people of the 1920s wrong? No. Were people of today wrong? No. An opinion can't be "wrong". His opinion that it is "the worst game ever" can't be "Wrong". It doesn't matter what popular opinion is, to him that could be the worst game he has ever played, He could have enjoyed it less than any other game he ever played, so to him, it could be the worst game ever.

Someone could put Atari E.T. on the top of their top 10 games list, if they really loved that game. Would anyone? Probably not. But if they genuinely enjoyed that game that much, they could. And to them, that would be the best game ever. And that wouldn't be wrong, just like I wouldn't be wrong for saying that game isn't that good at all. Just like some other person wouldn't be wrong for saying Atari E.T. was the worst game ever. It is completely and totally subjective, just like reviews are.

Critics often see movies before they are released, and post their reviews before anyone else saw the movies. If the critics hate it, then most people love it, or inverse, which both happen often, then are the critics wrong, because the majority didn't think that? No. Are the majority of people wrong? No. Both are perfectly valid opinions. A review is basically stating your opinion of something. Can an opinion be objective? No. So can a review be objective? No.

...but that's the thing. If it's just based on your personal opinion and not on any qualitative comparison to other games then it means exactly fuck all. You can call it "the worst game ever" all you want - it simply won't be true anywhere else except your own little world.

It'd be like me saying "Star Wars: A New Hope was the worst movie ever". Well, no, in terms of commercial success and critical acclaim it was a long ways away from that.

A good reviewer tries to put a game in context with what came before it despite his personal feelings. That hasn't happened here.
