That shit could take hours, so what is he supposed to do to keep his PC from restarting while it's still working on something? Come back every 10 minutes to click "Later"?

he would be damn proud.

also, ppl should try out linux on a usb drive you probably already have laying around house, it even has persistence (you can save stuff)

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ -- lets you install full os of your choice on usb stick drive

http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php -- noob friendly linux distro that'll work out of box (drivers for ethernet/video card ect)

put the two together and restart with drive in usb port, hit F8 for "boot option", will boot from stick on any computer with usb.

The escalating anger is too perfect. Like, as the timer gets closer to zero, it starts dawning on him just how fucked he is and the blood pressure keeps rising.

What would you advise as an alternative?

DOS

Linux, of course. Unless you have a bunch of money (Apple) it's your only alternative.

[–] Vailx 0 points 9 points (+9|-0) ago

The alternatives are:

1- Linux
Pros: This is the best answer. Linux is extraordinary. The user power is literally unparalleled.
Cons: Many programs are not written to work in Linux. This means that almost everyone will have something in their workflow that needs to be replaced or removed.

2- Apple
Pros: Sanity and functionality.
Cons: Expensive. Just as locked down as Microsoft products, though normally with a lot more user data protection options, often with sane defaults.

3- Windows 7 Pros: This OS was designed for users, and the user agreement is nowhere near is privacy shredding as Windows 10, meaning it has to ask you before doing totally crazy stuff. Almost everyone else who needs Windows is using this, so finding technical solutions is relatively easy. Because everything since then has been a deliberate attempt to tear down usability*.
Cons: This is still Windows, so Microsoft is busy adding as much spyware crap as they legally are allowed to. In many cases they will patch it in and then activate it remotely. Additionally, it will eventually end of life, supposedly.

Microsoft hasn't given us amazing options here. If you have a need for specific Windows programs, go 7. If you have enough cash and can switch over to the Apple system, that's a good call. If you can switch to Linux, DEFINITELY do that. Not everyone can for a variety of reasons, but it's seriously your best bet if possible.

  • Originally Microsoft claimed that "data indicated less users were using the Start button" and that this is why they deleted it in Windows 8.

http://www.cnet.com/news/why-microsoft-murdered-the-start-button-in-windows-8/

..but later we got the real reason:
http://www.dailytech.com/Windows+8+Designer+Metro+is+the+Antithesis+of+a+Power+User/article34354.htm

Metro was designed to be awful for competent computer users. Their supposed master plan was to make everyone use Metro, and then offer back a start menu later (after a lot of consumer protest, apparently) that would appeal to just the power users, with the hopes that their noob-base would stick to the simpler Metro.

But it was years after (and only once a real UI was again on the table) that we found this out, and it was never an official announcement. It was designer arrogance from the top!

You could use Mint or Ubuntu if it's a personal desktop, or CentOS when it's a server. There really is no OS that is the best for every situation.

You can disable automatic updates through the group policy. Takes a few clicks.

That's great and everything, but I had all that stuff turned off and I would still get shit like this happening to me. I've since gone back to Windows7.

That's weird, and it sucks. It's worked (and still is working) for me. I get the occasional "you need updates" notification but it's never installed, or downloaded, any update without my permission.

How do you feel about all the options that if you choose to disable them, windows will simply re-enable them after X amount of time passes?

I guess you're talking about Windows defender. Really stupid from their part, and it's infuriating. However, that can also be disabled permanently via the group policy I think.

Mind you, I'm not trying to defend Microsoft for any of their decisions, be it for the automatic updates, their antivirus, or their complete disregard for privacy with all the telemetry bullshit.

I'm currently transitioning to Kubuntu so I don't have to keep dealing with the little choice they give to the end user and the things one has to go through to simply change the default font, for example.

All I'm saying is that such changes are still possible, and no, you shouldn't have to go through all that. It's certainly an easy fix. It might not work for everyone but it sure is easy.

Youtube isnt an operating system. You cant slowly roll out exploits/vulerability patches in an os or youll be bombarded with 0 day exploits

Parent post needs a lot more downvotes. Removing the ability of a user to disable updates is a DESIGN GOAL of Windows 10. You can only turn off automatic updates with certain versions. Like most things in Windows 10, you need a giant set of scripts and probably an external application firewall to get back the basic Windows 7 functionality that this massive downgrade of an OS has caused.

That is literally my attitude and my emotional state when I use Windows. I punched my lcd once and cost my self 300 bucks because of this.

I no longer use Micro$haft products. God love Linux!

I moved to Linux when Windows 8 came out, it's not always the easiest, but I wouldn't change now for the world. My favorite thing? I once clicked on something I shouldn't have and Linux tried to open a mp3.exe type file. "Would you like to open in Wine?" Awesome. I also spent five minutes stringing along a "Computer virus expert" from India who insisted my Windows machine was infected.
