I was basing my statement on reading many times over the years how Indians had Roman coins in their possession, but a bit of googling found this among other things.

Vikings plundered monasteries with Roman coins plus Romans were pretty pathetic at the sea

I find it hard to believe that an entire continent can exist for so long without anyone finding it. Aboriginals made it to Hawaii with nothing but some really big canoes, so there's no way Columbus was the absolute first to America.

America has been inhabited since at least 11,000 B.C.

Columbus did not arrive at an uninhabited island, he definitely was not the first.
