And do they count the paper ballot or the machine? If they count the paper ballot what’s the point of the machine, and if they count the machine numbers what’s the point of the paper ballot (they’re hackable, that’s why we dumped ours I think)?

They count the paper ballot -- with a scanner machine initially, although a recount can be done by hand. The main point of the paper ballot is for that recount. The data going from the counters at the county seats to the state capital can be changed; ballots can be stuffed. It's hardly foolproof. I'm just saying that having voted in several US states, I've not voted in one that used purely electronic means, and I think they're pretty rare. For instance, all of the "battleground" states in the most recent elections have a paper trail.
